While you could use construction paper for short term use it won't hold up long term as it will get damp and salty pretty quick. I just use the cheapest black spray paint I could find.

Ok.  One more question.  tiles vs. clay pots?  I have had success with clay pots but see many people using tiles.  I have not seen any reasoning for one versus the other.  which is better?

I switched to tiles a few years ago and would never go back. It's much easier to aerate eggs that are on a flat surface than a curved one. Fish don't seem to care as long as they have a spot.
