Re: Breeding Journal, Orangespot Filefish [ Oxymonacanthus longirostris]

FWIW, one of the researchers of this fish figured out that spawn times are dependent on water temps. In other words, the eggs need an "aggregate cumulative temperature" to trigger hatch, so in cooler water, the pairs will spawn earlier in the day to give the eggs a little more time in incubation to ultimately hatch at the appropriate time. My pairs, I seem to recall were at like 6 PM, with lights going off after 10 PM? I suspect if I pushed temps higher, they easily would've shifted closer to lights out time.

No more spawns since the last one reported. The black O's have taken an interest in them and come close whenever they look like they might be about to spawn. They must be looking for eggs. I guess the clowns will have to move into the 120. I'll have to get rid of my spawning pair of Rod's Onyx. Anybody looking for a pair?

Blake, I think somewhere burried in my Youtube Videos is a vid of the Ocellaris coming in to nail all the floating eggs after a spawn. They learned, and I suspect your's have too. I'm thoroughly convinced you've been getting spawns. Keep pumping those fish full of food...they spawn every day when in good condition.

Ok thanks Matt. I'll try to find a buyer for my percs so I can move the black O's. The filefish still flutter dive and algae ram every night, but the clowns are always bugging at the worst possible time. It's like they can sense it.

Hi Matt, I ended up selling the pair. Between work and school I didnt have the free time to feed them as much as they deserved. I decided to let them go to a suitable home with an owner that was able to meet their feeding schedule. I do miss them though. :/
