The larvae were quite numerous this time, and the results of two days of spawning. They are keeping the damsel larvae company in the pretzel jar. Today is days 2 and 3.

So funny you mention that Kathy. I noticed this species is particularly peaceful among dragonets. I have been thinking of possibly putting together a group of 2-3 males and several females. Finding females has been my biggest challenge.

I was lucky to find a pair so enamoured of each other. They were flirting in the store I got them from.

Are you quarantining with any meds or just hyposalinity or what? I have had mixed luck getting these through quarantine. Several males have died on me, eating very well and still losing weight rapidly. I'm afraid to just throw them in with my quarantined and conditioned mandarins, I'd hate to lose the fish I've put so much work into already but establishing a set of these has been a real challenge for me.

I got these from a store that had kept them for a couple of weeks in their coral reef tank. They were flirting at the time. They appear perfectly healthy and are eating the pods in my tank, and I saw them snick at some frozen food I put in there. They are sharing the tank with a couple of peppermint shrimps. This evening I witnessed the female make an enormous poop, so I know she's eating and digesting. Her belly is round like she could be gravid. The male is quite healthy looking as well, and is certainly interested in the female. I see no reason to medicate them. I have several small tanks in my basement, so I will often QT new purchases in the tank they will end up in. I have very simple systems, and I've made a choice not to connect them, so each tank is individual and doesn't share water with its neighbors. I think I just got dumb luck with these, but I haven't had them very long, so there's no telling what will happen.

Thanks for sharing! My systems aren't connected either but I do group my projects by compatibility for the sake of space and presentation. It's a small apartment so I'm trying to make the best of it, and the only rule is everything except what's in my culture station (storage closet) has to be presentable lol I'm so jealous you're going to crack these way before I will at this rate lol good luck!

Today I saw the new broodstock eagerly eat some frozen mysis, just the eyes... Larval eyes were clear this morning, pigmented this evening. I added phyto and parvo nauplii as usual. The jar could likely be siphoned, but I'm afraid of sucking up larvae, so I'll wait a little.

More active darting by the dragonets. I added 200 ml live ISO as the jar seemed a little clear for the first time today. I sampled 100 ml and found lots of parvo juveniles, nauplii and eggs, still , so I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing by adding nauplii and eggs twice a day.

That first picture could be of the ones that were hatched a day later than the others. Remember there was a spawn on the fourth and one on the fifth that got mixed together. So today is day 4 and day 5. Day 7 is the day they always die, so I have to wait 3 more days to find out if I am doing anything right. Still, I am thrilled at this milestone.

I'm sure there are ciliates in there, but yes, parvo is what i feed them. It's the only thing I can culture that is small enough.

Not that I know of, but the size of the larvae is less than 2mm in length, by looking. They are so tiny.

Thanks guys! next milestone in a few days. I wonder what tomorrow will bring. Broodstock were doing the paired rise dance that mandarins do, this evening. No eggs, though the female sure looked gravid enough. I hope the tank is tall enough for them. If not, I'm freeing up some 20 gallon tall tanks in the next few weeks. It would be worth it to put them in one, if they have not spawned by then.
