B&W Occy Pair - Friday, April 3, 2009 9:01 PM
0
I won't say this is my last pair since I said that before and well, now I have these guys.

I just got them today from Nick.  Great guy!

These are both from ORA but about a year apart in age so that's good for genetics, I believe.  Check them out, they are just beautiful.  They look like velvet.

You got it!  You can't tell in the pic but she is considerably larger than he is.

Tal,

What can I say..... IM SOOOOO JEALOUS!!!!!!!  I wanted those sooo bad.  They are just beautiful...

Like I said in my PM, I'm just happy that you got them out of the potential buyers.  Of course I would be happier if they were swimming in my tank

Definitely if they breed, you gotta hook me up with a couple

Again, nice score, they are beautiful

Thanks guys, I'm really happy with them too.  Nick said he never saw them spawn but the had been in a larger tank and would disappear at times so they probably were spawning.

I'm excited too.  The male has a slight mis-bar, but from what I've read it's not a genetic feature that will be passed on for sure.  With proper nutrition during the larval stage I should be able to have offspring with "normal" markings.

These guys spawned yesterday.  It's their first time and I can only count 50 eggs (there are some behind the male) but I think that's a pretty good start!

These guys spawned on Sunday so they won't hatch for another week, if they make it.

I have three other groups of different types going right now.  Occys, Percs, and Perc/Occy hybrids.  Actually, the Percs should hatch tonight.

The last batch didn't make it but they have spawned again yesterday.  That's a really good sign since B&W Occys are less regular than normal Occys.   Looks like about 200 eggs this time.

Thanks!

I think I'm going to move the Occys to a larger tank todayso I can pull these eggs and incubate them myself.  Going to be a bit tricky with them all spread out though.

Update:

Only 3 hatched from that spawn and they are still doing well.

I had better results from the batch that was spawned the last week of May.  About 20 (maybe more, hard to count) hatched last night.

The first B&W's hatched on the 18th, so 22 days.  They grow slower than all of the other groups but they do have their second stripes. (The Percs still have only 1 stripe)

I'll post pics soon.

I transfered the 3 from the first batch to the grow out tank today.  While I was at it I snagged one of the ones from the second batch and took some pics.  These are 23 DPH:

Great stuff Tal!  I know you have told everyone before, but what is your food blend for your broodstock and what is the frequency of feedings?

Right on Tal!  I just picked up two B&Ws straight from an Australian breeder.  They dance, but i can't tell if any dominance has been established.

Those look really nice Kevin.   It's hard to tell in the pic, is one a bit bigger than the other?  If so, you're good to go.   Just feed them often and be patient.

Trick photograhpy, those are the smaller ones.  They are growing though.  Should be ready by mid October.
