Picasso pair???
-
Saturday, May 16, 2009 3:15 PM
I bet most of you are thinking Picasso clown, but I'm talking about Picasso Triggers... Has anyone ever seen a mated pair of Picasso Triggers? We seem to have found a pair, and I'm so fascinated with the way they're behaving, that I'm very tempted to set up a new system for these guys, and see what happens. These two have been alone in a tank together for at least a month now, and have been doing what appears to be some type of nesting. I haven't found much info on breeding triggers. I guess even if they don't breed, it would be cool to have the pair anyway. Does anyone think that it's possible to get them to spawn?

I'll check with Matt and see if he has any info. I don't know what is know about their spawning habits. I would expect a large tank would be needed but who knows. I'll get back to you if I find out anything.

There isn't a lot of info about them but Matt did point me toward a book that we have in the MASM library by Dr. R.E. Thresher that has a bit of info. Without getting too deep, I found a few main points: Their social structure is "harem" based. Triggerfishes are the only know group of reef fishes that have evolved extensive maternal care. Their eggs are the fastest hatching eggs recorded for demersal spawning reef-fish. Usually the first night after being laid. HTH

hmmm...."extensive maternal care" That is very exciting to think a marine fish will actually try and rear there own spawn! But, how well they do it and how well a skilled breader could do it are yet to be determined. Who knows, the larvae may feed off the mothers slime coat or something odd like that.

The emphasis was on "maternal". Most male fish take care of the eggs.

If these are anything like that, it would be very cool! *I dont mean mouth brooders, but just some sort of post hatch "taking care of" would be cool.
