Info on Green Chromis? - Tuesday, October 20, 2009 7:16 AM
0
I've been watching the school of 15 Chromis constantly laying eggs and considering trying to raise some.
Getting the eggs out will be easy- they prefer to lay on the algae clip and the plastic dobie pad cover on my magnavore.
I have found a few vague references to breeding them, but no specifics on them. Most info refers to damsels or clowns. A few mentioned that they take around 4 days to hatch. One mentioned that they had a hard time getting small enough artemia to feed them. No mention of rotifers. Another stated they needed small strain rotifers, which I dont have. I saw a few reports of getting them to day 8-10.
I know they are cheap, commonly available fish, but I also hear, and have experienced myself that many wild collected dont do well, and many of those imported end up dieing before they hit a customers tank. Cheap usually = badly handled in collection and shipping.

Anyhow....
I think I will pull some eggs and give it a shot. I dont expect any success from what I have read, but the eggs, equipment, and rotifers are sitting here so....
Here goes nothing!
If anyone has any info on raising them, foods, etc... I would be grateful
Deb

Debbie, I have been thinking of doing this too, but the time & effort seems wasted due to the cost and availability of these fish.  Keep us posted on the egg rearing as this has more interest to me than the buying of inexpensive fish.

Cant be any worse than the dozen Clarkii I cant sell!

Anyone wants free Clarkii come get them.
I wont be raising anymore clowns till either I manage to catch a hatch from the GSM's in the display, or my B&W pair start spawning. It was a good experience though and I learned alot from it.

I might be able to get my shop to take the clarkii's off your hands.  How many do you have, and what are you asking for them?  I have to come that way soon for some Banggai....

I'll be coming that way in the next few weeks.  Is that soon enough?  Thanks, Deb!

I haven't found much either other than they are fairly easy to spawn but difficult to raise due to their small food requirements(Witt's book).

Can you point me in the direction to any other info you've found, please?  Or, post links here.  Thanks.

There's a tiny bit here:
http://www.marinebreeder....c.php?f=170&t=5103

Nothing on Breeders registry I could find

There was a little in Matt's book also. There is some info on Damsels, but not much specific on Chromis.

Interesting project.
How large are the clutches usually?

Several hundred eggs.
They will plaster 3-4 square inches with them and they are really tiny, much smaller then clown eggs.

Do you ever get any pics or video of them in action?

I will

I have a video camera, good camera, and a digital microscope that takes pics and movies so I'll have lots of purty pics for my breeding journal once I get started.
I need to quit thinking and get moving.

That a fair number of eggs.

Perhaps one spawn could be split into a few different experiments?
 If you have the space.

Just to segue a bit, how do you like the new 'scope Deb?  Andy gets some really nice shots with his.

Do you get enough eggs that you might consider passing some to others to try some different things as well?

They are always laying eggs, so I would have plenty to share or try different methods with. Chad if you or anyone else wants some eggs let me know. I'll just add another algae clip to the tank and let them go at it.
I have a roughly 13x12 fishroom so I have space to play.
Tal, I like it!
I haven't played with it alot recently.  Been distracted with other things and not real cheery lately.

I'm thinking about picking up a goldfish bowl to use instead of the 10g tanks. Set it up like Tals kreisel.

Do you have rotifers Chad? I can give you a starter of those if you need them.

On her algae clip.    That's why she's so tempted to give them a shot...  easy collection!
