Snail eggs? - Sunday, November 15, 2009 5:58 PM

I have been finding what I believe to be snail eggs in my display for about a month now.  Tonight, I finally caught the culprit in the act.  Unfortunately, I don't even have an ID on what type snail it is to even begin thinking about raising any larvae.

I'll have to do some research on it.  I got him as part of a cleaner pack at an LFS.  Never really bothered to look up what inverts they were.

That's cool Mike.  They make really interseting patterns.  I'm thinking Cerith too.  Check here for more info: http://www.reefstewardshipfoundation.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21

After doing research.  It is a cerith snail.  However looking at the manner in which the eggs were laid it the will more likely not survive.  I will keep everyone posted

Why do you think they won't make it?

I probably won't be able to catch any larvae in time before the other fish in my reef get them.

Went downstairs tonight and the eggs were gone.  So they either hatched or the eggs themselves have been eaten.  Hopefully I will get another spawn and see if there is a regular pattern

Good luck with them. They are definitely ceriths, but the egg strands look different than the ones that my ceriths lay. Mine have crawl-away juveniles, though, and readily reproduce successfully for me, so keep the faith! Hopefully your will do the same.

Like your, mine lay tiny, tiny eggs. It takes them a while to go from egg packet to a big enough juvenile to notice them. Keep an eye out.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for them.  The good thing is that this is probably about the 4th time that the snails have spawned.

A cultured set up will probably be better for them.  I got them in a reef cleaner pack at Seashells about 6 months ago

FYI, I had GOOD LUCK taking a fresh razor blade and scraping my Nudibranch eggs of the glass for incubation / hatching in a separate container.  So that's certainly something to consider next time you find eggs on the glass..

Thanks for the tip Matt!   I will try that the next time I see the eggs.  I think that having them in a separate container is the way to go for these.  I haven't seen any sign of larvae or baby snails.

I have also been looking at getting an exact id as the exact species of cerith snail that it is.  I have found a key but unfortunately my lights are off right now so I can't get a good look or decent measurement.  I will see if I can have some more luck tomorrow.

That is a good thought Matt.  I used to have some Nassarius that would lay eggs on the walls of my tank all the time. Never knew what happened to them. Not with the rock panel and unyielding coralline algae on the walls I'd never know if they still where.
