Possible torch coral recruit - Thursday, January 14, 2010 6:26 PM

I'm excited to report that I think I have a torch coral recruit. Torch corals brood their larvae internally and release them when they are pretty competent to settle. So, you are more likely to see coral recruits from them than from broadcast spawners. This one took up shop on an old gorgonian skeleton that is sieving a pretty brisk current.

Yeah, I think you're right Chad. I hadn't ever seen one, just Aiptasia. I thought I could see it calcifying in there, but I don't think it's happening. Bummer.

Is the white tissue I see underneath part of the animal? Looks like it's kind of wedged in there, I wouldn't expect an anemone to sit like this unless it released and drifted there. Seems like it would re-attach normally, fairly quickly.  Are there other Mojano's or BTA's in the tank? I've seen stony babies that look just like this. It'll be interesting to see......

I was mostly joking when I said that it was a Majano. I really don't know what it is but in does really resemble some of the mini BTAs I've seen.

I've not seen Mojanos before I saw this thing. As I said, plenty of Aiptasia. The tissue underneath is a part. In fact, the whole thing has flipped itself around now so it's pointing the other way. The pedal tissue (and stem) are opaque, which is why I thought it might be calcifying under there. Eric B. suggested that I touch it because I should be able to feel the skeleton. It's in a place where I can only get one finger on it and the gorgonian moves to the touch, so I can't get a good feel.

So, until it develops more and/or shows it's evil side, I'm just kind of stuck.
