Banggai release date during MACNA, pull or not before - Saturday, August 21, 2010 3:34 PM

I currently have a male Banggai holding eggs.  The 21 day mark to pull them is right during MACNA on September 4.  My wife will be home when I am gone but I really don't want to leave her with more than I have to since she will be home with a 2 month old and an almost 3 year old.

I am thinking of 3 options.

1)  Pull the babies before I leave, which is Thursday Sept 2.

2)  Pull the babies after I get back which is late Sunday night

3)  Pull the babies before and put them in a vat of green water until I return.

Won't you be home in the next day or two?

Yeah I would be home the day after.  I just don't want him to spit them out while I am gone either.

Then, you may have to pull before you leave.

If you pull them one or two days prematurely, they will do just fine in a tumbler with the circulation.  If you do something like my vase setup with the controlled water feed, you can even submerge the top and once they're up and swimming they can leave the vase on their own accord.  Just be sure FOOD is ready while you're gone.

Strip that male and they'll be fine!

Oh and BTW, greenwater with these guys is going to be worthless.  They need copepods or baby brine shrimp.  Someone is going to have to feed in...rotifers...I have a hard time believing they'd even elicit a feeding response.

Pretty much decided the I am going to pull the eggs on Wednesday before I leave for MACNA, which would be Day 18.  I set up a nursery in an unoccupied 20G that I have plumbed into my broodstock system  Here a couple of pics.

Alright, I pulled the eggs.  They are incubating in the glass in growout tank.

Here are some pics. 18 days post spawn

Yeah, that was harder than I thought it would be.  Oh and by the way, don't put them in a tank with snails.  The snails went right towards the eggs.  I had to pull all of them out

I went down and took a look this morning and everything looks good.  Right now they look like tiny larvae with a yolk sac attached.  Some of them look like they are trying to swim.

Got back from MACNA last night.  The eggs were pretty much the same as when I left.  I think that I lost some of them.  However this morning, I starting to see little Banggai emerge from the yolk sacs.  They haven't completely hatched yet but probably will do so in the next couple of days

Glad to hear so many made it this far.  Obviously, benefit of hindsight, you probably could have waited to pull them...

Maybe.  They have developed faster upstairs in mouth of the male.  The tank upstairs runs warmer than the tank in the basement.  Oh well,  at least it looks like I will have some fry to work with

Pics of the baby Banggai - 23 Day post spawn.  Notice the yolk sac still at the backside of the fish

Good to see that some of them survived the early pull.

Pics are a bit fuzzy but I would say that you should be working on a settlement report...

I just took another look at them.  They look a little bit more developed, less of a yolk sac.  I did notice some feeding response when I added the artemia.  I counted a grand total of 5 at various stages of development.  We will see how this goes.

Given 'em another day or two and they'll be swimming around.  You made it Mike!

I would say that the 2 most developed ones are settled.  They are capable of swimming under their own power.  I think it will be a few days on the other three.  My plan is to keep them in the glass until all are swimming on their own.  I tried to get a pic of the 2 swimming but I didn't turn out very good due to all the artemia in the glass.

EDIT:  I did turn down the air flow.  I didn't want to beat up the juvi's too bad.  They are now feeding in their river of artemia.

At this point, I can declare that 2 eggs hatch and have now settled.  Here is a video (top down) of the fry in their glass.
