White Stripe Maroon Clown Pair
-
Thursday, March 10, 2011 9:44 AM
Im buying a proven pair of White Stripe Maroons. What do I need to know, to keep them spawning after I get them? I know they will take a month or two to settle in and return to spawning.

Provide them with a stress-free environment and start feeding them a well balanced diet. Smaller meals, more often is better than larger meals, less often.

Are there any recipes on here that make good conditioning foods for clowns? I have a few other pairs I want to work with also. They are only bonded pairs, not proven.....yet.

I feed my fish a wide variety of frozen foods. Ocean Nutrition, H2OLife, bloodworms , beef heart, mysis, squid and fresh garlic. I also add a little vitamin supplement like Vita-Chem. If you want to make your own, Matt Wittenrich has a basic recipe in his book: - 4oz fresh frozen shrimp
- 1oz squid
- 1oz clam
- 1oz crab meat
- 1oz marine fish flesh
- 1/2oz nori
- 1 gelatin pack (unflavored) (Optional)
- 1 tsp liquid vitamin supplement
Chop in a food processor and freeze.

I just made a new batch of food yesterday. I went to the fish counter at the grocery store and bought some of everything of marine origin they had, heavy on the shrimp. I add in lots of nori and dulse (algae), some supplements (cod liver oil, spirulina, etc.), and blend it all until it's mush. I wind up with about 4-4.5 gallons of goo. Place in bags and freeze. Even paying retail prices, it's much cheaper per ounce than buying fish food. There's really no trick to it, you just need as much variety as possible. I trim off any skin from the fish (as it really screws up the blender), but I do the shrimp whole. By the way, I do not use gelatin. I hate the stuff, honestly, and my fish have never really taken to any food that uses it. I want my food to break up as it melts so the cleanup crew has an easy time with it.

I agree on the gelatin Andy. I wouldn't use it either but it was in Witt's recipe so I felt that I should post it.

I haven't gelatin in any of the food recipes that I have made either.

Well the White Stripe pair deal fell through. (If the seller reads this, Im not upset, or mad.) But I did work out a deal for a Gold Stripe pair, that have spawned. Getting them in about week and a half.
