Clown Eggs - Monday, June 27, 2011 8:35 AM
0
I keep having a problem, but I think it might be self induced. I have my trio in my main tank still. I do not have them in a brood stock system. The last two batches have hatched during daylight hours, or just disappeared.  I had a problem with the little white stars, but have really cleared them out. Also I have a bristle worm issue, but I'm clearing them out as I see them.

What would be causing the eggs just to fall off during the day cycle? I feed plenty. I use Rods, cyclopese and mysis. I don't have the shelf up where I want it to move them into another tank yet.

I;ve never had this issue till the last two batches. They have been laying eggs for over a year now and nothing has changed.

Thanks for any help.

It does certainly sound like something is eating them, It may even be the parents. I know it is a pain but is there a chance that you can remove the eggs after they are laid and place them in a larval tank and observe them to see if they are fertile. It's possible that the male is not fertilizing the eggs and so the parents are removing them.

Well as of right now they are laying on a 20# rock that's on the bottom structure. The only reason I won't move it is because the nem is attached to it. I tried placing a tile in there and nothing liked it.

Well that shoots that idea...I think you need to setup 24/7 video surveillance on your clowns and then post the link to the feed here.
You can crowd source the problem!

There is still something you could try.Siphon some of the eggs out and incubate them in a tumbler.

I was looking for a tumbler the other day. Got any links for a small inexpensive one?

I know there are some instructions around for making diy ones pretty cheap with a inverted pop bottle or funnel. Tal made up one that was in one of his threads. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Those bs hatchers that use an inverted soda bottle work just fine.

I never used a tumbler myself but I wondered if those would work Luis.  Good to hear I was on the right track

So about anything shaped like that with a stopper in the bottom, an air line ran flush, and a good flow will do the job?

I think I can handle that. Do you start to feed them in there too? How long after hatching do you put them in the other tank?

You don´t feed in the tumbler. You pour the newly hatched larvae in the larval tank.
Alternatively, you can sit the tumbler in the larval tank, cutting it shorter than the tank´s height.Better WQ and the hatched larvae escape to the rearing tank ;-)

ok. I went and got some funnels that I'm going to use. I'll let you know how it works when I get some more eggs. Thanks for all the help!

I once hatched some fish in a corner of a plastic bag clamped to the side of a filled and warmed larval tank with some airline tubing and air keeping the eggs in circulation.  Any conical structure will do.
