Hanging bags, sure. Whatever you have, honestly, that'll give you enough volume for what you want to do. They need a little light to get it, and you need to be able to add food to the bags and take water out/add water in daily. If you can do all that with what you have, you're golden.

OK, well this is what I setup for the time being.  2.5g buckets.  I had already created some buckets awhile back that have overflows in them.  So I figured would be good candidate for the o. marina to overflow into the pods.  my rotifers are on the left and I figured I could use the 5gs below to play with paste on the pods.

the light is just work lamp with a PC in it.  I have a dual 8w t5 fixture above the top buckets in case more light is needed.

Looks good. Those are food grade plastics, yeah? That's a nice little workstation.

You might want to consider a way to have the overflow of the O. marina run through a sieve before it gets to the copepod buckets. There are times when ... stuff ... (algae and whatnot) grows up in the O. marina and you don't necessarily want to encourage that to move to your pods and then to your fish homes.

Would it work to just put a screen on the overflow like we do for larvae?

That should. You'd have to get it off for cleaning every day, though. I'd probably aim for ~50 micron.

I am assuming we are talking macro algea?  I was just thinkin 120 or 250...easy to buy locally.  But you think should go all the way down to 50?

So, what is the timing for this to really kick off?  Should I be trying to get setup now and trying start some phyto?

Does it have to be food grade plastic?  If so, where do you get food grade plastic pales?

you can google grades of plastic and find out what is food and not...and there is controversy over what is truely food grade anyways.

There are several kinds that are clearly not food grade, but there is alot of research being done on the 'food grade' plastics to determine if they are truely.

My buckets are #5s and are considered food grade but most current standards.  I think there several classifications that fall into food grade.  you should read about them and decide for yourself what is or is not.

That's really what I wind up looking for, too. I've never had problems with cultures in anything that recycles as a 5. I tried some cheap plastic containers once for some snails and they all died horrible deaths. I felt really bad about that.

Jeremy, I'm really just waiting on the temps to drop enough to make shipping feasible. The truth is that it isn't even dropping enough at night any more for me to be really comfortable even with first overnight, much less any cheap shipping. But you guys are paying the shipping, so I can try to send things to you whenever you are comfortable with it. With reasonable temps (not more than high-70s, low-80s during the day), I'd say that 2 day shipping would be fine. Higher than that and you really want to get them the next morning probably.

Caesra: I have a macroalgae in mine that freaking survives passing through 27 microns. I don't know how, but it always grows back.

many algal cells sit around the 4-6 micron mark...  bear in mind I consider Oxyrhiis to be a fairly large cell in comparison to what I have been chasing.

While I rarely sieve algal cells (I prefer to control species using temp and salinity as it is much easier) Florida Aqua Farms has a ready made 10 micron sieve which has been handy for separation (at least for me) in the past.

Always fun when you begin to think of size, many of these protists will pass through the confines of a coffee filter, which when you think about it is quite amazing!!  Sooo much in such a little space!

Anyone got a lead on a place to get T-Iso? FAF was supposed to send it to me and didn't. They are out and no idea on when they are getting more.
