Heh, I know that feeling of wondering if you're ever going to see them again.  In my case, so far I never have.  I hope tomorrow brings you many strong larvae!

Thanks Mindy,
I didn't get any more than a total of 6 tiny larvae.  I really thought there would be more. I need to set up a fishbowl chrysel to keep these small hatches, as keeping the rot numbers up on a BRT for such a small number of larvae, when one is unsure if they are there or not, is perhaps a waste of effort and real estate.

I fed the BRT half my dwindling culture of Apocyclops panamensis, and sufficient S-rotifers, and some Isochrysis and RGcomplete.
I still can't see any larvae.

Contrary to popular opinion, I had great results when hatching them under a bright light (see my journal). I would usually get >90% hatch within a half hour.

I couldn't stand it. I transferred some of the water to a fishbowl, and carefully examined the rest to find the remaining larvae.  I may have as many as 3. My small heater fits in, and I have an open airline to give a little stir. The larvae I could see were striking at something.  I'm leaving the 18watt light on overnight.

Several times this morning, I've seen a tiny tranparent larva swimming in that jerky, striking at food motion.  I'm not sure if there is more than one still alive in the bowl, but I'm sure there is at least one.  This is much more satisfying than the BRT, when I couldn't see anything.

The larva seems to be continually striking at something, but its belly does not look any larger.

Well, a day or so after i wrote the last post, I could't find any live ones, and now the spawning female has disappeared, for good.

Now I have 4 adult dottys, and no apparant pairs.  Two singly housed appear to be males, and the two I have paired are getting along very well, frequently occupying the same tube, but not spawning.  Sigh.

I took the recent widower, a male, and put him with the two that get along so well.  Now they are all getting along in a 20 gallon tank with my remaining banggai.  I am sure one of them is a male.

Does the fact that they are all so chummy mean that they are all males, with no females to fight over?

Nothing but copying and pasteing. I intend to edit the top post if this set of broodstock works, so I just wanted to record the details here so I won't lose it.  I'll fix the top post when I submit a report. Honestly, I've tried so many times with this species that the top post is very confusing.

Last night I moved the third orchid newbie in with the other two.  Whole lot of chasing.  Nobody seems to be damaged, so we'll see how this goes.

Two the dottybacks are tolerating each other, and flirting a bit, but neither can stand the presence of the third one.  He is a paler color than the other two.  He reminds me of the tiny female, that never looked well, but would spawn huge nests. She died some time ago for unknown reasons.  I'll move the third dotty out soon.  Perhaps I'll try to pair it with the male of the tiny female.

i did pair it with the male of the tiny female, and this morning there are eggs in his pipe cave. !!!! 2 weeks together. Must have been male and female already with no switcheroo required.  Will I finally get this species done?

Yesterday they spawned again, so today I pulled the eggs, and put them in a tumbler with some methylene blue on a warming pad.  I hope this works.

well, the eggs didn't fungus over, but only one has developed eyes and body, the rest (hundreds) are infertile.  My adult male is shooting blanks mostly....pity.  He is older, but he used to do a better job... I'll give him a few more tries before he gets put out to pasture.

The other two are not spawning yet, and I'm disappointed in them.  They should be by now.....

found the one confirmed female dead this evening.  No apparant reason.  Second female to die with this male.  I wonder if it is his fault.  The fact that he guarded infertile eggs for the last few spawns makes me want to get rid of him.
So out of 4 dotty backs, I got one pair, infertile, and now there are three, possibly all males, one murderous. grumbleā€¦.
