Lighting over your Larval tank - Wednesday, September 21, 2011 5:27 PM

So i'm curious as to what everyone uses for lighting over the larval tank. I was trying to use ambient lighting, but i'm afraid it seems that the BRT is so dark that there is no way they can see to capture prey. We've lost alot of the larvae, and i'm wondering if part of it was the lighting. Or lack there of. Thoughts?

Jumping in, lol
I use a slanted open blind in the room, to let the morning light in...
Then I have our son turn on the strip light when he gets home (like around 3pm)
Just a regular strip light (Walmart)- but I have it up on a shelf, so as not to have too much direct lighting....
and I've kept that on until bed time

I use clamp lights with CF bulbs directly over the rearing tanks. I have them on for 14hrs, for clowns.

Good to know Tal...so what i did by hanging the light 2 ft above is acceptable then. I was afraid that maybe it might end up with too much light when they hatch.

I have my clamp lights with CF bulbs 1-2" above the water to avoid the light getting to the other tanks.  For the first couple of days, I use a 4W LED bulb to avoid too much light for the larve.  Increase the wattage as day goes by.

I use a 24" 15w bulb over my tank. I had two sheets of paper under it for the first week then removed one sheet for the next week then took all the paper out and kept the lights on a 16 hour cycle. Not sure if this is the correct way to do this but it worked/is working for me.

I have clip on lights too.  I have 7.5 watt incandescent bulbs (they are only 1.25" round...kinda cute) that I use at first which just put a warm glow to the water, then I switch to small compact fluorescent bulbs.  I'm still at the "winging it" point in my breeding "career" though, so don't take this as advice.
