Am I a Hermit Crab larva? - Thursday, October 13, 2011 9:35 AM

Long story short...I collect these in my snagger regularly, sometimes a few days in a row, sometimes not for a week.  There are 3 "Mini Mite" or "Mini Might" (?) Blue Leg Hermits in the tank.  I believe the name comes from their purchase size not a specie, but I am not sure.  I think these larvae are from the Minis, but again I am not sure.

Other (known) inhabitants:  2 Orchid Dottys, 2 small Ocellaris, 1 Banggai, 6 Peppermint Shrimp.

Video is 4 day post collection and magnified 205x.

I think so.  I snag these regularly, too.  Mine are very strongly positively phototactic, and swim towards the light tail first.  Do yours behave similarly?

Yes I have seen the same under my microscope, mine will release a few times a week that I have noticed. When I collected they to responded very well to light. Would love to give them a try just need to find the right size shells for settling...........

Welcome, Tank1980!  I don't know what breeding experience you have, but you might consider trying something a bit easier and less challenging as a first breeding project.  Please tell us more about your marine breeding experience and interests.  What brings you here?

Thanks Jim,
I come here to learn and read about all the info others have. I have been in the saltwater hobby for close to 18 years but in the last 2 years have taking the plunge into breeding. I have tried my hand at gold stripe maroons with a friend for some good time now as well on my own. Never got to settling yet.........

I now have 5 pairs of different clowns and a pair of assessors, all still a bit young or to new for spawning. I am a huge zooplakton fan and have been  culturing a few types of copepods for a few years now. I noticed an assessor would tend to hide for many days at a time then join the other like it was never gone. This is how I noticed the hermit crab larva.

Looks like a hermit crab larvae to me too.

A friend of mine gathered some larvae up the other night.  He thought they were clown larvae but they were far too small.
I put one under a microscope and it looks similar to yours.  I've had mine in rotifers for a few days now.  I'm going to start NHBS
tomorrow.  Hopefully I can sift my sand to find some tiny nassarius shells for them

I've been busy as hell Andy.....I haven't seen you in a while too....I haven't seen you over at MASC so I thought
you were overloaded with work hehe......

I just had dvenson come over and finish up a breeding tank so I'll be able to keep a cleaner system......
I haven't even gathered up a batch of eggs for almost a year hehe.....I just set out a pot with hundreds of Darwin eggs though...
I'm ready to get back to breeding.....I'm trying those hermit crab larvae right now.

Good to see you though....how's your tank doing?

Hi Matt....good to see you still around
Were you ever successful in raising hermits to settlement?  I went to the site that shall
not be mentioned and noticed that you had larvae a few years back.

I'll go ahead and take this off-line so I don't clutter the thread too much. Sorry for the OT.

Hey people with hermit crab larvae experience. I am looking to use them as a food for ceph paralarvae. Anyone have any details? How often they release, how many they release at a time, anything else helpful?

If I recall correctly, I used to see them with some frequency, but not so much any more.  Probably related to the hermit crab population levels in my tank.  When I would snag them, I might catch as many as 100 or so, but nothing like the HUGE catches I'd get with peppermint shrimp or cleaner shrimp.  These larvae are also smaller than the larger decorative shrimp larvae.  Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Thanks Jim - that is very helpful. I want smaller, so these might be perfect. How many hermits did you have?

Gee -- I have no idea.  We're talking about a 210 display that was seeded with probably 20-40 or more of them over time, but I have no idea how many were alive back when I posted earlier in this thread.  That tank has been through many changes since then.
