Your thoughts on causes of misbarring?

When I was hatching clowns regularly, I had some batches that were all misbar, and some that were all perfect barred, or mostly.
Black ocellaris seemed more prone to misbar.
 
What are your thoughts on the causes of misbarring in A. ocellaris and other clownfish?  Is it genetic, or environmental? Is there a critical time when attention should be paid in order to avoid misbarring, or in order to achieve misbarring?  Does iodine play a role?  Some other nutrient or water condition?
 

I've heard a lot of mixed thoughts on this too. I think it's genetic. I've read that it's anything from the water composition to the feed to the amount of light they get.

We don't have a very complex understanding of the topic, but we do have some examples.
 
With GSM's, when we switched from stand alone larval tanks, to ones with filtration on a system, misbarring stopped (or was at least significantly reduced).  The same thing happened with Black and Whites for us.
 
It's also a general rule that less barring is due to water quality, and more barring is genetic.  A local friend of ours however has a pair of A.percula who's offspring are all misbarred.  The parents are properly barred, but no matter what, the offspring always mis much of their barring.
 
So that's our take on the issue.  It's usually water quality, but sometimes genetic.  And we aren't sure what specifically about water quality that it is.  Ohh, and we always read that it all is determined before metamorphosis, which we think is true.

IME, it varies with species. 
A. ocellaris - .1% misbar, at most
A. ocellaris (Darwin) - 50%
A. percula (normal) - 25%
A. pecula (Picasso) - All over the place

In your experience, can misbarred parents produce normally barred offspring?

One of my Darwins, the male, is a misbar and they produce normal barred offspring along with misbars. My Picasso pair would be considered Grade B and produce everything from the usual, slow barring perc traits, normal 3-bar patterns, the whole gamut of Picasso grades and Platinums in a single batch.

Yes, I dont think the barring has anything to do with their offspring.

I've noticed when I don't clean as much as I should I get misbars.  Right now a batch of 3 left (out of 150ish) occies are all misbarred - I let the ammonia get way way high - the others died, these guys made it.  The first four batches of the same parents I was fastidious on cleaning - zero misbars.   
 
I'll bet a shiny nickel that environment and or nutrition has a lot to do with it.
