Going by the "eye" identification... that would be a Perc.  I dont think there is any one good way to identify a Perc vs a Occy.

Are you talking about the adult picture or the fry?

Are you talking about the adult picture or the fry?

The adult - It is said Perc's have beedy pupil's while Occy's have a darker Iris which blends into their pupil a little better.

In your pics, the iris is a very orangish color while the pupil is black.

i was kinda thinking the same thing- that's a lot of black lining around that center bar for an occy.  we'll have to see on how the stripes come in to know for sure on what they are.

I think you may be right.

Fish base agrees with you, saying that the black edged fins are Perc.  However the Occy listing on fishbase lists a rounded Caudal fin.

He meets both of these criteria.

I dont know his past that well and I got this pair about 6 months ago.  Im also not sure where to start with counting dorsal spines hard and soft.

Ill try to get clearer pictures tomorrow to see if he (or they) are Perc's is its looks like they might be.

It's the first batch through, I've had a couple of other nests but have managed to do something dumb with each previous batch.

These are the longest surviving, best looking and largest so far.

Re: Breeding Journal, Species: [Amphiprion ocellaris] - Thursday, December 1, 2011 12:42 PM
ok. great job so far. percs (in my opinion) get their head stripe sooner, but they take a long time to get the rest of the stripes in. Ocellaris get all their stripes in realitivley soon.
with my percula fry at 82/83 degrees F they got their first stripe at 6 days post hatch, the occellaris got their first stripe at 12 days.

First head stripes today

About 1/2 of the fry have developed a head stripe like the individual above.

All fish now have a head band and are eating very well.

Most have transitioned to eating flake food and crushed pellets.  I am also providing 1 day old brine.

New hatch 12/6/11 and 12/7/11 approx 50-75 fry over the two nights.  Mostly on the second night.

These still only have head stripes, none appear to have a second stripe (or hint of one).

Others in same grow out clarkii (2 full stripes), Tomato (2 stripes, rear partial on most, some full rear stripe))

I just realised that my fish in grow out are now 60 days post settlement.
Ill take some photos tomorrow, then post and do a report.
In total I have three species that all have now made it to 60 days post settlement (about 74 days post hatch) within 1-2 days of each other.

I also have a second batch about a month younger than these ones that are also growing well.

The colour and a little bit of reflection, I think are excellent.

The parents laid another reasonable size nest tonight, probably 200 eggs.
