Filtration Details:  Skimmer, Live Rock, Macro Algae, Carbon, GFO

Lighting:  LED 50% white, 50% blue.  Sunrise and Sunset via Red/Blue strip

Larvae Description:  Slender transparent tube, filled with 4 white balls to the eye. 
These look to be prolarvae so did not have clear eyes, mouth, cloaca etc.
By the end of the day, the gut and cloaca appear much more developed.  Mouth is still not apparent.

I found these on the glass of my reef tank a few days ago (19th February 2012)


 

 

 
Im inclined to think that they are chromis eggs, but there are a few things that don't seem right.
1. They look different, less elongated than normal and quite white rather than cream
2. The chromis are not guarding them
3. They are on the front glass, no where near where they normally lay (back or side wall)
 
I have left some in the tank, put some into a container with still water and some into a tumbler.
 
I collected them by scraping them off of the glass with a cut straw and some air line.
 
In taking the photos quite a few of them twitched if I bumped the plastic that they were on so I think that they are ok at the moment.

I measured the eggs, length 0.75mm width 0.4mm.
They were laid in a patch of algae on the front glass of the aquarium about 200mm x 100mm with eggs less than 2mm apart, lots are touching.  No pattern or grouping, just scattered.  Estimate of 1000+ eggs

Video shows heart beating and blood flow.  Its at the limit for what my camera can show.

The eggs sink when removed from the glass and sit on the bottom of the still container.
 
One of my chromis seems to be hanging out intermittently around the eggs, but not really guarding them.  The same one is also doing some swooping, but at the other end of the tank, this is normal pre and post spawn behavior.

Of interest, all of the eggs in the tumbler appear to be no good and are milky white in appearance.  95% of the eggs in the containers look to be good.
All of the eggs were scraped with a cut straw with air line tube and suction. The the contents were then randomly separated across the three containers with several batches to each.

We have a hatch of Prolarvae

 

 
To me it looks like they dont have a spinal column as yet, just soft tissue.
My only other experience with prolarvae is with the P.hepatus.  These guys make the P.hepatus look slow and bumbling when swimming.
 
They are fast and aggressive swimmers in comparison, to the eye they look like a clear pipe filled with 4 white balls

The grid matting is 10mm square so that makes the prolarvae about 2-2.5mm long.

More development

 
The eggs in the reef tank have not all hatched (about 1/2 have).
Those in containers under a light appear to have all hatched with 24x7 lighting.
 
Im going to add rotifers to one container with a small amount of green water to see if any will eat rots.
I dont have anything else to feed them, so something is better than nothing.

The mouth looks to be nearly complete
There has been quite a bit of mortality (including the fry pictured).
My guess is that there are 20-30 left

They are also now extremely difficult to see and catch.  Other than a few stragglers they are now transparent excluding the head and eyes, so catching them is a bit of a task.

In the first picture a rotifer is shown for size comparison.  Does this look to big to be food?

Found the female dead on the bottom of the tank. Looked very beaten up,

It might of been the blue tangs or the nasso, the chromis haras them a bit and sometimes get chased for their efforts.

A new spawn from these guys this morning. 
A while ago I lost one of the pair (my male Blue Tang got sick of being chased away from the eggs by the chromis male?/female? and gave him a severe beating that it did not recover from).
 
In May this year I added four new fish and removed the remaining one to another tank.

I have had a couple of nests from the new fish, but no real progress so far.  They are not laying consistently as they are still smallish.  I would guess at a nest every 5-6 weeks.
Hopefully they will get a bit more regular.

I have the same trouble with my Yellowtail Damsels, but they are a few years old.

In the last week I have had three nests of chromes from the seven fish in the tank.
Two of these nests have been huge, approx 12" in diameter of 50% coverage.
 
The video shows about 10-20% of the fry collected, and I only collected about 1/3 of the fry from the hatch.  My guess would be 2000-3000 eggs and about 1000 fry collected.
 
Now I just need to be able to raise one.

The latest batch from a hatch on the 2/21/2014, about 10-20 fry, Today is 10 days post hatch.
