A. ocellaris hatch on day 6?!!! - Tuesday, December 6, 2011 10:36 AM

my ocellaris pair has been laying every 10-11 days .
hatching on day 8 every time @ 84F
last night when i was feeding at about 7:00pm i noticed about half of the nest was gone .
no fungus , i assumed the male had decided to start eating them for some reason . i then noticed a handful of very small larvae with huge yolks bobbing around the brood stock tank .
they must have been slowly hatching all evening .
my lights dont go off til 12:00 .
what would prompt hatch on day 6 ... 2 days early?
temp has been @ 84F with no fluctuatiuons.
anyone see this before ?
just when i thought i had this pair figured out . now i dont know when to expect hatch on future nests .
the only thing i have been doing differently is adding vitamin C to the food .
im stumped

At 84F they should be hatching on Day 6, I think.  I am surprised that you ever got a hatch on day 8 at that temperature.   In any case, you should turn it down, as it is the upper range of temp and I think it is good to have some wiggle room.

I agree with Kathy.  They should definitely be hatching before day 8 @ 84degrees.  Mine typically hatch at day 7 at 80 degrees.

an interesting update on this batch:
i was able to scoop 5 or 6 larvae out of the brood stock tank where they had hatched and transfered them to a BRT.
i then pulled the pot with the remaining half of the nest and incubated in a BRT .
The following morning when i checked there wasnt any other larvae that had hatched .
suspecting fungus (even though i did a methylene blue dip and bleached the BRT before adding the nest ) i inspected the eggs and they all looked healthy !
soo back in for incubation they went .
the next morning 100% (of the remaining eggs) had hatched .
so im not sure why my pair ( whos last 3 clutches had hatched on day 8 @ 84F)  gave me a batch with a split hatch 2 days apart .
1/2 on day 6
1/2 on day 8 ???

any hoo i followed kathy's advice and lowered the brood stock temp down to 82F .
we'll see what happens on the next nest . they should be spawning tomorrow .
has this happened to anyone else?
would vitamin C play any roll in this ? i have been dosing pretty heavy with it lately and adding it to the food .
its the only thing that i have done differently .

I have lots of batches hatch on different nights. Really odd.

do you guys think its a trend with certain pairs or more of a random thing?
i have no clue when to expect hatch from this pair now ,especially since i have turned down the temp a couple degrees

not a clue on that. I'd like to know too. It's pretty much all my batches hatch about half one night and half the next. Most of the last ones disappear during the day though.
