Naturose (please excuse the spelling mistake  ) has been off the market for years.  They gained FDA approval and now only sell into human grade products.  The less then stellar stuff does get offed, but rumored to go to Asian hatcheries (not for resale).  There is a shortage of Haematococcus powder on the market.  Nutraceutical companies are willing to pay a premium for it and have gobbled it up.  A massive global corporation that specializes in pigments is also hoarding it and paying top dollar.
Many companies bought it in bulk and repackaged it... that is what Brine Shrimp Direct does with numerous products.  its one of the things Tim's website excels at.  I've been buying from Tim for years, great outfit.

No, I've compared using it to not using it and I can see a dramatic difference, but that's about it.  No real scientific data here.

Mine came from Brine Shrimp Direct.  It is in a clear rigid plastic bottle.  It is called "NatuRose", not Nutrarose.

I notice the NatuRose is out of stock in all sizes, so I wonder if they are having stocking difficulties.  I sent an email because I was planning on ordering some soon.

I do see they have another astaxanthin product simply called "Paracoccus Powder".

As well as "Carophyll Pink" which is pricey:

There is also Phaffia yeast...

but its out of stock as well

BSD replied to my email suggesting I use the Paracoccus Powder which actually has more astaxanthin than NatuRose.  Hmmm...

Which astaxanthin does it have, though.  Astaxanthin has an optical isomer that does not get used to make that gorgeous color. The algae of Naturose makes the correct isomer for our uses.

I noticed nobody here used agar as a binder? I've never used gelatin because of the smell!

I didn't weight my last batch's components but so far I'm very happy with this batch:

4" chunk of salmon filet, skin on
5 large table shrimp, whole, shell on
7 bay scallops
2 tbsp finely crushed spirulina flakes
1 whole sardine, about 6" long
4 fresh frozen fish roe sacs
1 tspn astaxanthin powder, forgot the brand at the moment but not naturose
2 tbsp Rapashy Spawn and Grow powder
1 packet of agar powder dissolved in ~half cup of boiling water

So far I like the consistency and the fish eat it well.

It's not as 'set' as previous batches I've made but I actually like it better this way. It holds together well enough that it doesn't disperse tiny particles into the water but its loose enough that I don't have to prepare it any further after freezing the mix. It's basically come out as a soft gel that the fish are able to tear into as it sinks.

The gelatin from Florida Aqua Farms doesn't really have a smell.  Unlike the gelatin at grocery stores which smells HORRID.
