Rearing Peppermint Shrimp - Thursday, March 1, 2012 10:27 PM

I noticed one of my Peppermint Shrimp with eggs. Put her in a small 1/2 gallon plastic pail with air and heat evening of Jan 21. Got up morning of Jan 22 and she had released the young. Here are a few pics. They are less then 24 hours old and really tiny, hard to see with the eye.

Almost 8 days old. They look different after each molt, kind of neat

Very cool! Freaky looking critters when they're that small. You should start a journal for them.

To my surprise 13 days later were still alive. Since this last morph  they seem to swim with purpose now instead of just where the flow takes them. They have got some new legs that they use to swim with and can even see them chase down the live baby brine. I have to siphon out the brine shrimp every couple days because they grow to quick, much faster then the peppermint shrimp. The hunted could end up being the hunters. Here is a couple snaps

Nice pictures!  Do you have any rotifers?  They will eat rotifers at first, while you are getting the NHBBS hatched.

You might consider starting a Journal on your efforts to raise these little guys.  I know you're new here.  To start a Journal, go to the "Invert Breeding Journals" forum, and click "Post New Thread".  You will see a form with the various fields for you to fill out about the broodstock, spawn, hatch, larvae, etc.  Fill out the fields you have information for now.  You can edit that first post later, as you get more information to complete the other fields.  Be sure to make posts in your journal describing your efforts, and post your photos to document the various events.  The photos you posted above would be perfect for documenting a "hatch" event.

You should post some pictures of the parents, so we can get an ID on which species of Lysmata you are working with.

Good luck with them!

EDIT:  Never mind about the rotifers.  You posted more info about them while I was composing this.  Very nice!

39 Days Post Hatch 3 of the shrimp have settled. They now look like small adult shrimp and no longer are planktonic. Eyes are attached to their body instead of on long stalks. The others should settle over the next few days.

Here is a picture of one of the settled shrimp

Here is another batch of larva that are 18 Days Post Hatch

Well, you're posting too fast for me to keep up!

This is great work.  You should be posting it in a journal, though.  I'd encourage you to Journal this info, and then file reports, so you can start accumulating MBI points!

And if you have pictures of the parents, that would be helpful.  Also, you will need pictures of the parents holding eggs, so if you don't have that already, plan on getting some.

Thanks for posting the pics of the larval tanks!  I might copy your setup...I'm getting desperate!  Hahaha!!!

What are you using the Kent drip doser for?

I use the doser for water changes. After removing tank water I add the new water back by dripping over the period of an hour or so. It is nice, I can fill the container and just leave knowing it will just add the water in the container.

Ah ok, I use a 2 gallon bucket and airline tubing for the same sort of method.
