My mystery fry - Monday, May 7, 2012 1:15 AM
0
Went to someone house to pick up this clown pair and their eggs and turn out they were not clown eggs but they cared for it. I didnt see any fish in his tank other then this pair.
Here is a video of them before i took them home.

They hatched and im 100%  sure they are not clownfish. Day 1

I asked him many times what he had in there and he told me he had a blenny(He collected it in Galveston, TX)  that was in there but he took it out a month ago. Here is a pic of the fish he sent to me.

So i guess he caught a pregnant blenny and it laid those eggs?

If there was no other fish PAIR other than the clowns in that tank, I'd say clown eggs. Blennies are not internally fertilized so a pair would also be needed to have fertilized eggs.
The weird thing is that by day 14 you should be able to recognize those larvae as clownfishes, I guess...

Like i said, "mystery fry". Only way to know is to raise them.
Im 100% sure they are not clownfish by looking at them now. I have reared hundred of clown so i know what a clown fry looks like.
A pic under the scope my friend took at day 1.

This is indeed quite strange. How long were the eggs in the pot? You said the blenny was removed a month ago so if the eggs showed up after that they can't possibly blenny eggs. Not to mention there was no one to fertilize them. The larvae don't look like clowns though. You sir, have a little mystery on your hands. Enjoy!

Fishtal, I just posted what that guy told me.  To me, I think he had a pair of blenny in there that laid those eggs. After they laid eggs, he removed them and told me there were clownfish eggs so i can buy the pair. When i got to his house for pick up, I  looked at the pot and knew they  were not clownfish eggs. I told him about it and even showed  a few picture of my clownfish eggs so he can compare. I went ahead and bought the pair but didnt pay for spawning pair price and he agreed to it. Took the flowerpot home on day 6 and they hatched the next night. I think he is not telling me the whole story. LOL

From the first post I thought the the other guy was trustable. I guess I was just naive or dumb.
It resembles the nest of a starry blenny I saw online somewhere and probably other related blennies...

Not plan on raising them when i found out they were molly miller blenny but Matt Pedersen told me to raise it once to learn from it.
If i can raise them to settlement, I will give some free to everyone since i dont need them.
I can always go to Galveston if i need some for myself.
KatyL will be the first to get more then everyone else.

Mike, you should give yourself more credit!
You have raised non clown larvae, which is far beyond some breeders around could ever have done!
Blennies are not especially difficult, but now that you have the know how,you can try many nice species,Meiacanthus,Ecsenius and such!

Before i left for vacation, All(about 20) were not doing good so i thought they were not going to make it but I was wrong.Wonder what have they been eating while i was out because their tummy is big.
Caught one out to do a video.

That big die-off in posts 23 and 24 was likely metamorphosis. Congratulations on getting at least one through!

Now, you have a few challenges ahead if you wish: 1) Doing other species of blenny or 2) Continuing with these and working out how to get more of them through meta (probably better foods at some point in the process).

Good luck with your decision!

Going to challenges myself to other species and I dont have the parents(blenny) so cant work with these anymore.

You can create a journal for anything. The reports you submit for points are only for events that occurred while in your possession. So for these you will get all the points except spawning. You cannot get the success icon as that takes all 4 reports successfully submitted, not just 60 DPS.

Then, when your fry grow up, pair up, and spawn you can submit that report and take the success icon.

Exactly!  Nicely done Mike!  Only other folks I know who've done this are Wittenrich and Sustainable Aquatics (others may have too, but the public record shows only you three )

Thanks Matt.

Been neglected to this 4 fish(no waterchange for 1.5weeks) and their home had been very very dirty to this thick slime algae that covered around the side and bottom so i decided to clean it 1hr ago.
Surprise.Surprise when I removed some slime algae(1/4 in the BRT), i saw 10 more swimming. LOL
After saw more fish swimming, I stopped the cleaning.  To me, I think they have been eating this slime algae to survive and i bet you there are more down there.
Their home:

Their food (slime algae).

Wonder if there were some 'pods living in the algae that the larvae were eating... Algae was creating hiding places too?
