Hey mmoner, I have a couple questions about the bio-reactor if you dont mind.

What is the diameter of the tubing?
Is it acrylic or plexiglass?
Is it extruded or cast?
How much did the tubing cost you?
Do you have to shake it up?
Is the top disk removable to allow for adding more water? Do you seal it with vasoline or do you just lay it on top?

I think I'm going to build one and add a magnetic stirrer on bottom to avoid settling.

Hi helix,

Tube is 19cm in diameter, 100 cm height. I would now prefer a tube with less diameter.(light penetration thus efficiency)

Acrylic and plexi are the same material i guess.

We can find different diameters of tubes in my plexishop. I cant guess that is extruded or cast.

If you are able to extrude or cast one, my advice is make the bottom of the tube conical, not flat.

It cost like $60.

Dont shake it, even move when it is full. Just run strong air pump. Does not settle much, just give boiling air from the bottom.

It has a cap, may be removed any time. Just lay on top.

I dont think you are going to need a stirrer while running a boiling pump...i just see settle on the air tubes, your choice...

wow that's a great project! Can you post up a DIY thread for it? Suppliers?

Thank you for kind words. Well this is pretty simple project, if you have a good acrylic master.

Can be perfected, as i mentioned some design ideas for Helix up in the thread.

Some detail pics...

that's very nice! That cylinder wasn't cheap though.

Awesome for the larger collection of pictures. I contacted my local plastic company and picked up some 2.5" diameter acrylic extruded tubing. However, 11 ft will only produce around .75 gallons. I have since revised my culture vessel and I am using a 5 gallon hdpe bucket. I will post my own thread instead of hijacking yours...

Couple things I learned along the way:
  • Cast is approximately 4x the cost of extruded.
    • It was around $20/ft for around 5-6" diameter(cast)
    • I would need to order some of the larger diameter extruded, but shipping is quite expensive as it must be purchased in 7ft lengths.
  • Cast is much more durable than extruded
    • Cast has a longer life than extruded, extruded may last a year or two(possibly longer) depending on use.
    • Cast is easier/safer to drill
I'll look into conical bottoms and costs.

Nice info,

you may check this link as well, they have efficient  tubes, again they produce 4 liters ( lika a gallon) but pretty expensive for a non-commercial hobbyist...

After 6 months culture is still going on...there had been just single culture just dumped for not coloring as well as its seed, guess it is the lamp that i ve changed for a while or the medium conditioning.

This is the 12th day of a new split, usually should get darker than photos on that day, but i am experimenting on the medium conditions; like using less fertilizer, different spectrums of lamps, etc.
