Apogon Leptacanthus Breeding Project
-
Monday, July 9, 2012 9:25 PM
I have been thinking about making an attempt to breed some apogon leptacanthus. It is my understanding that these species are different than other cardinals, since the babies are released as planktonic fry. What would be the best choice for food sources for the fry through their development? If anyone has had any experience with these, please feel free to share your experience. Thanks.

Rotifers and Copepods. Do a search for my journals and reports here in the DB. I got them to 45 days. With what I know know, I could probably do them (and labs and commercial breeders have).

Hi Matt! I have read your thread, thanks for the suggestion. I am a total newbie, so I didn't know if there was a specific strain or type of rotifier or copepod that would be best recommended? Can I ask why you have not continued to breed these?

Just wanted to know if I could culture Reef Nutrition's Roti-Feast to feed the larva... Would this work?

Ok, I have added 5 blue streaks to my breeder tank. From what I can identify, it appears that there are 2 females and 3 males. I read that the males have longer dorsal fins, so if this is true, I should hopefully get 2 breeding pairs. These guys have been nicely acclimatizing at my LFS for about a month, all were eating and look like they are in mint condition. I brought them home yesterday afternoon so now the fun begins! I will hopefully include some pics soon!

You want to pick up RotiGrow Plus (or RGComplete) to culture your rotifers, and for greenwater I'd probably suggest RotiGreen Omega. Rotifer wise, use what you can get - I've been told that growing them warmer will make them grow smaller, but you can also size sort your rotifer cultures to push them towards a smaller size (Requires rotifer sieves, see Florida Aqua Farms). Copepod wise, I don't really have any particulars...maybe the Pseudodiamptomus from Algagen might be a good one to try?

Matt I would love to see you try them again. I followed that journal and would love to see it retried.

Just an update. So far my 5 cardinals are now reduced to 3. I think I have one male and 2 females. I believe the male has the longer dorsal fin, where the other two seem shorter. The two passed about a month ago, about a two weeks apart. I didnt notice any active aggression, but the these two were always passive when it came to feeding time. I don't think they were holding any eggs either? For the last month the trio has been eating very well. I'm keeping an eye for any mating behaviour. They are in about 20 gallons with a few small rocks. Any tips to help with spawning these cardinals?

Feed 'em lots and they should do the rest. They were pretty easy to spawn.

Will do! I have been feeding them PE Mysis and brine, but will double up on the PE Mysis twice a day and see what happens. I thought maybe playing the "Ghost" movie soundtrack might set the mood too
