Frustrated with Darwin's - Friday, July 20, 2012 6:33 AM
0
Several months ago I purchased a proven breeding pair of Darwin Clowns. I have them in a 75G reef, the only other fish in the tank are a "bonded pair" of Firefish. The reef tank is an established tank, stocked with LPS and Softies and one small RBTA.
The clowns live in a terra-cotta pot and rarely venture out but hover at the entrance of the pot. They will dart out to grab food, but quickly dart back in after a few bites.

Water Chem is as follows:

SG 1.026
PH 7.94 - 8.10 (As charted from the Apex)
Temp 85.0 - 85.3 (As charted on Apex)
Calc 480
Alk 7.8
Mag 1350
Phos 0
Nitrate 10

Lighting Cycle

Attinic Blues on at 0700, Right 150W halide on at 0715, left halide on at 0730. Right halide off at 2130 left off at 2145, and blues off at 2200.

Food: 2-3x day
I alternate what I feed but they don't like the Rod's at all, be it the breeder or fish only. They nip and let it float by. They go nuts for the Mariner Plus Flakes!

Mariner Plus w/ High HUFA Alge Flake
Spectrum Plus
Rods Fish Only
Rods Breeder
Mysis
Brine

They  eat, live in the pot, but that is it. I have adjusted the temps from 79 to the 85 they are currently at. The breeder I got them from said he only had them spawn when he had the temps at 85, so I am trying this, but nothing... I think they have become platonic and or they are like an old married couple, sex is no longer in the picture

Any tips? Is this just a waiting game? Any tricks?

Thanks

Justin

I would be concerned for the corals keeping your system so warm.  My corals really start going downhill (death comes soon) if the tank hits 86F.  My corals do seem to tolerate 84F well though.

Anyway, I would suggest you quit feeding them the flake food and get them weaned onto more nutritious foods that are frozen, or high quality "breeder style" pellets like Otohime or TDO.  NLS pellets are ok though, do they eat those with relish?  Make sure any dry foods are fresh, not over a year old. Make sure they do get a fair amount of algae into them or you will battle constipation like I am right now.  I'm having luck with the HBH Super Soft Spirulina pellets though, so I will make sure these are included in their diet now.   My Clowns will only eat the smaller pieces of PE Mysis shrimp, so if you stick to smaller pieces you may have better luck getting them to eat more mysis.  Also, frozen Brine Shrimp aren't overly nutritious as they are mostly shell, and not much meat, so make sure you aren't feeding too much, and any that you do feed should be "Omega 3" or "gut loaded" with spirulina so that they are nutritious.

I have had some success getting pairs to start spawning using live blackworms that I special ordered through Petland.  I'm not sure if the worms helped or if the fish were just ready to spawn anyway, but it's worth a shot.

Another thing, just in my own experience, I have never been able to get a pair of clownfish to spawn in a reef tank.  I have only had success in broodstock tanks where the pair of clownsfish are the only inhabitants.

Thank you. They do eat the high HUFA flake and the frozen but hate the Rod's. The nip and spit and move on to other food. Mysis is the favorite. I just ordered the  Otohime 1.7 and I'll take any advise on other foods to buy.

Thanks

My main foods are a homemade frozen mix, PE brand mysis, the HBH Super Soft Spirulina pellets, and TDO EP1 pellets (Top Dressed Otohime).  A few times a year I special order a bag of live blackworms and feed them heavily for a few weeks.

Once you have the feeding covered and have a comfy spot for the fish with low stress there isn't much you can do except wait.  Some clowns are very finicky, and some never breed.  Since yours have bred before they should be easier to entice.

Check out the "egg fostering" thread.  If you know someone with clown eggs you could try that.  Worked like a charm for my fancy Ocellaris, but hasn't worked for my Perculas or my Clarkiis.

Don't beat yourself up too much about the clowns. They are not the easiest fish to get to spawn by any means. My theory is that clowns are borderline temperate fish, not tropical, and need a lot of environmental cues to get them going. If waiting for them to get going is really bugging you and you need to see some fish spawn, get a pair of some other kind of fish. Most of the fish I've ever kept other than clowns were really easy to get spawning.

Very true Andy.  I swear, Clowns are "the easiest" to raise, and the "most difficult" to breed!  Ok, that's definitely an exaggeration, but still...frustrating sometimes.  WHIW Justin, I had a pair of fancy Percs (Platinum x Picasso) together for over 2 years with no signs of even bonding.  A week ago I split that "pair" up, and re-paired them.  Sometimes pairs just don't work.  You're definitely not at the point of needing to give up yet though.

One other thing you could try is to replace the clay pot with a tile lean-to.  Sometimes changes like that can trigger spawning.

Thanks for the tips and encouragement. I will stock up on better foods and replace the pot with a tile lean-to and see what happens. I also placed black felt around the lower 1/3 of the tank where the clowns live thinking that if they don't see all of the activity in the room, it may be less stressful on them.

Thanks!
