Re:Valenciennea puellaris - Saturday, August 25, 2012 6:02 AM
We get these fish by "accident". First I bought just one fish, but that one died immediately.
Got heart attack ore something. I'm always really specific with acclimating my fish/coral etc. Well, my dealer knows that and I got new fish for free, but he got only this pair...Well, we got two of them now.
First spawn came as a total suprise. That was my firs aquarium ever and got it running in beginning of march 2012. One day I just noticed, that the larger one was nibbling the smaller all the time and chaseing her around. The larger one was also get really dark, almost blue. After this, the smaller dissapeared and the larger one vas building a HUGE sand castle over their homestone. I was really worried, because then I didn't know anything about their courting and spawning behavior. Female stayed in the nest next 4 days. In fourth days evening we were watcing tv, when I suddenly realized, that something strange is happening is aquarium. It was approx. 10pm and they had released the larva. The whole aquarium (270l) was full of them.
Well, in may I moved them to a larger aquarium and they stopped spawning. (female jumped in the floor when moving them. Maby that's why stopped?Ore just because of the stress of moving.)
But yesterday they started courting again and today the female is missing and male is building a sand castle again. Now I'm prepared littlebit better, so I hope the spawn will be successful.

This is their newest sand castle.

Ok. There's something wrong, because it's not adding my pictures. (I have done it earlier, so I do now how to do it...)
I just add a link here...hope it's ok...

Thank you Fishtal.
Well, something didn't work and the female camed out in third day.  Now they are doing this nest building and courtship dances again.  I just have to wait and hope for the best. Again...

This morning my tiny acanthastrea coral was missing. While I searched it, i also looked in puellaris's home cave, because the"door" was wide open. And were really surprised to see a big mass of light yellov eggs, wich the fm was tending. So they are spawning afterall. They just don't anymore act like they are supposed to. I don't have any idea of the day of spawning, so i guess i just hawe to suck the eggs away and try to hatch them artif.

So you just bought two fish and put them together and that was it? Did they fight at all?  Any difference between the female and the male?

Kind of...
I bought them togeter. They were selled as a pair. When I got them, they looked exactly same. Not a single difference. Now the male is much larger than the female. And near spawning the male changes color to little darker. (face and Pelvic fins turn blue) But there is no differences in fins etc. So you really got to have two of them to see the differences.

The pair is hustling aroud like mad. I saw the spawn today again. Its light yellow. I suppose i'm going to get the spawn out in saturday. I belive that should be the day4 past spawning. Luckily I'm having almst everything ready for larvae. Sotifers, selco, phytoplankton, artemia... Just now I'm holding my fingers crossed and thumbs up for the spawn to be a success.

Yay! Today I got puellaris larvas to rearing(?) tank. Kinda failed and didn't get all of them. :/
And the picture is poor. They are really small, about 2mm.
