Otohime or TDO? - Tuesday, September 11, 2012 9:02 PM

This is probably a simple question for most of you, but I'm wondering which would be better: Otohime or top dressed Otohime? I have astaxanthin, is making TDO as simple as mixing it with Otohime?

This is for some ocellaris clowns. I've raised them a couple times before, switching to crumbled flake, but I want something to bring out their color. Color in the broods I've raised thus far has been kind of 'meh'.

TDO rocks! You'll see a big difference in coloration with it.

Making TDO is not as simple as simply adding Haematococcus (astaxanthin source).  TDO is not just top dressed with Haematococcus (astaxanthin source) but also natural feed stimulant, a natural immune-stimulant and very high grade salmon oil.

You'll need to use an oil to coat the pellet.  Getting the right amount of oil:pellet:powder ratio is tough and takes trial an error.  Then you will need to store it in an air tight, moisture an light proof container under refrigeration if you want any real shelf life.  Astaxanthin oxidizes pretty easily and converts into another form.

FWIW prior to TDO and SA Hatcherty, everyone just top dressed their own, if they used top dressed.  I didn't mean to make it sound like its not possible, I hope I didn't come off like that.

Interesting. What does it convert to and is it bad?

I don't know the correct spelling, but IIRC it converts into astaxan"theen".

I'll connect with Eric tomorrow and get him to break the whole thing down to me once again

IIRC its not bad, just far less effective for what we're using it for.

IMO there is not even really a comparison between the two.  The TDO is far superior if you are trying to get better color in your clowns.  I did some testing on Ocellaris for Reed Mariculture that showed the differences between regular OTO, OTO with cyclopeze, and TDO and the results are impressive.

TDO FTW!    For the minor cost difference compared to Otohime, I find TDO makes sense.  I'm all about cutting costs where I can, like making my own broodstock food, but I don't bother making my own top dressed growout food when TDO is well priced, comes in great sizes, and is easy to use.
Don't let fear and common sense stop you! =]

I ended up ordering TDO B1 and SA Hatchery Feeds .5mm. I'm going to try both. My clowns should be hatching tomorrow, so I expect by the time they are ready for non-live food, the feeds should be here.

Good choices Tami,
It's good to get them the Astaxanthin when young in my experience, definitely smart to start with the TDO B1.
  TDO does rock :-)
