Problem with fry in a reciculation system

I have been breeding clownfish, dottybacks & seahorses With great results for 6 years now. I have been moving clownfish eggs on clay pots & tiles to a 5 gal. blacked out tank with new water by it self with good results. Trying to make life easier I am trying to raise the fry in my recirculation grow out system & the fry are dieing in 2 days. Water condition is good since I have a 95% survival rate from time in the system to a sellable size. I am not changing any water in the first 3 days. Also when I add Reeds green water algae the water turns gray instead of green like when I use it in the 5 gal. tanks. The tanks are clean before any eggs are in it & I have it aerated & a heater since the water is contained. Any idea why this is not working? Thank in advance.

Do you have a pic of your system? Does the system have some type of filtration? If so, you may be filtering out the phyto and rotifers?

I'm not really understanding what you have going on either.  I would think a recirculation system would need to be designed to allow rotifers and phyto to survive the trip from the sump and back up to the tanks.  I know larvae can't handle too much water flow either.  A pic would probably help.

Their is no recirculation of the water. I used a 53 micron rotifer sieve over the bulk head but I turned off the water to the return. I planned on day 3 a slow drip but did not have many fry left at that day.

So essentially, the tank is stand alone?  It is just placed in the recirculation system so that you can eventually turn it on and integrate these new juvies into the recirculation system without moving them to a different tank?
 
If that's the case, what is different here than what you have successfully done in the past?  Is the RotiGreen within the expiry date?
 
Are you using water from the growout system?  I have had poor results doing that, even if all the juvies in the growout system are doing very well.  I get the best results by sterilizing new saltwater with bleach for 12-24 hours, then dechlorinating just before use.

Thanks for the reply. The tank is plumbed into a 22 tank system but the return water is turned off. I was planning a slow drip on day 3. When I hatch eggs in my 5 gal. tanks they are sterilized in bleach, rinsed, & air dry for at least a week & all is well. I just started trying to hatch & raise then in the system where I would grow they out until I sell them. I cleaned the tank in the recirculation system but did not bleach it. The green water is only a month old & turns the water green in the 5 gal. tanks but gray in this one.

Thanks Gresham but I don't think it is the algae since when I add it to a sterile 5 gal. tank & the water turns green. It might be the bacteria from the grow out system water reacting to the algae.

Right, I caught that... but who do you think is more positioned to help you... our phycologist who's life has been devoted to phytoplankton, or?

I would suggest you try sterilizing the water overnight.  You could do a test run by sterilizing the saltwater, dechlorinating, then adding the RotiGreen and see if stays green.  That would be pretty easy to do.
 
Like I said already, I haven't had much luck using "used" saltwater, especially unsterilized used saltwater.  I think that's your culprit, but I'm no expert.
 
To sterilize the saltwater use 1 mL unscented chlorine bleach to each gallon.  Use just a little bit of air to circulate for 12-24 hours.  Dechlorinate by using 1 mL sodium thiosulphate solution per 1 mL bleach used.  Sodium thiosulphate solution is made with 60 grams sodium thiosulphate crystals and add enough water to make 1 liter of solution.

I think your on the right track as I thought the water from the system might be the problem. I will not take the chance of adding bleach to a tank plumbed into the main system even if I drain it but I will change all the water before I start another batch. I have always used new water on stand alone tanks & had good results. Thanks for the reply.

i had that problam as well i by mistake bought roto green iso when i needed roto green omega and iso didnt give me any luck but the omega is awsome almost a zero death rate good luck

and also i drip a gallon of water twice a day in a 10 gal i put 5 gals of mom and dads water in by day 6 or 7 the water sterts to go down the drain using a round spong so fry doesnt go down the drain not using a heater i do keep my clownhouse at 80 to 85 at all times i add new rotifers everymorning with 1ml of green water twice a day with a air stone and i have a 96% survival rate most of the time feeding the brood stock could be a huge issue i feed rods food 3 times a day hope all works out for you

Well crud... not having tested those paremters amd mot having the water leaves us high and dry.  There was a possible precip going on.
 
Rotigreen, Roti as in rotifer.  Roto means broken in spanish, so perhaps you calling it Roto is ticking it off?  It does come from a area with old hispanic history
 
 

What's you CA/MG and ALK levels like in this system?  Do you use lanthanum chloride at all, or any PO4 removers?  What additives do you use on the system where this water comes from?
 
This is a follow up on the email you sent, and after Eric emailed you back (he and I were brainstorming earlier)

ya i love all the products gresh i have a freezer full of grow plus and green omega i have all new pairs just waiting for eggs to start coming in i miss it alot its nice to sleep in thoe haha

To answer some questions, I use roto green nanno not iso. The water is made up every week using a Spectrapure rodi Max Cap with 3 di units. I mixed Istant Ocean salt to 1.020 & mix it for at least 24 hours. I make up 275 ever week & use all of it. On Sunday the PH was 8.0 & the alk was 6.1 dkh. The only thing I add to the system is buffer & I added 6 teaspoons mixed with rodi water & dumped in the sump. I do not test ca, mg, or po4, this is a fish only grow out system. Out of the aprox 400+ gal. system I change out 50 to 75 gal. a week & the system is not stocked heavy. A year ago I had close to 5k fish in it & now 1500 with only 300 being close to sellable.
At this time I am still using sterile 5 gal tanks to hatch out clownfish. On the problem tank I drained it & it is sitting dry waiting for eggs. I will fill it with new water & aerate it the day before I add eggs which will be next week.
