Culture medium description:
(this could range, example with algae could be “10ml per l of guillards F formulation” or with A. tonsa it would be more like “300ml per day of algal mixture containing gymnodynium, tetraselmis, isochrysis, and rhodomonas” )

Notes:  I specifically chose Fritz two part solution because the vitamins and minerals are stored separated...this enables a longer shelf life of the product!

I am finally getting around to posting this journal!

So, I got a starter from a local fellow hobbyist, and began taking the plunge of live algae culturing. I started with nanno due to it's easy reputation- quickly finding out it is just that.

Began culturing with the Miracle Grow + essential elements formula (2L bottle with 0.5mL of mg and 0.2mL EE). Have since then switched to F2 (Fritz 2 part solutions).

***NOTE: Miracle grow and essential elements WILL grow this algae, and quite rapidly, is sufficient at keeping LOW density rotifers alive (NOT thriving)... The rotifers fed off this have such a poor nutrient profile they are unable to sustain fry for extended lengths of time.

Got all my culture vessels switched entirely (100%) to F2 this past week! I also realized I never posted any pictures of this setup!

It is in a cedar box, with a white board top, along with rotifer and brine culturing. Roti's and brine are not covered, but all algae's are sealed.

Here's a full shot of the box it's in. Makes it to where I can shut the lid and hear practically nothing!

Today is technically day 87, for this culture.... doing good so far! I have crashed several 2L but never too far gone! Need to get the scope out and get some good close ups of this culture! Will do this in the morning!

[This post was marked as helpful]
My Chemist husband refuses to let me get the mixed batch of F2, (meaning vitamins and minerals are already in the same container, not separated). It's an extra step for me, but hardly one worth noting. And he thinks this will have a more stable and longer shelf life. And since he foots the bill... I am humoring him on this one!
