SECORE-Coral Spawning & Breeding

Does anyone else follow the work done by SECORE?
 
It is one of the projects that got me into the industry as my long term project is to breed corals in captivity instead of fragging.

It's been a while since I saw something come out of secore into the general media....I'll have to do some digging.

I have their book on getting coral larvae to settle around here somewhere but I haven't seen anything by or about them in years.

Well yah, of course you won't hear much about them during NON SPAWNING SEASON.  Funny how your article came out AFTER the spawning season, and prior you hadn't herd anything in a while from them :lol:

I have also followed them for a while and am lucky to have befriended a local zoo guy who works in SECORE.  He says they are going strong and he spends time in the Caribbean every summer working on egg collection and fertilization.  I too am interested in the breeding of captive corals.  Are many people here interested in this?  I know that I am vastly oversimplifying here, but if one has some large colonies that came off the reef near each other for close compatibility (but not too close because they don't self fertilize with clones), then many corals and anems have very high fertilization rates.  With the right light schedule mass spawning doesn't seem too hard if you had a fair number of specimens.  Because I am a big believer in live zooplankton as food, it seems like it would be easy to feed the planulae when they settle within a few days to weeks.  Most of them put out a sticky filament to catch prey.  With good biofilm surfaces I hear that settlement percentages are high, as is survivability.  The biggest obstacles I see are first, the expense and difficulty in obtaining large colonies because most people frag their corals, and second, using something like a greenhouse to provide lighting cues for spawning.  I think artificial daylight and moonlight schedules would be a lot more problematic than just acclimating them to our hemisphere.
