What type of shrimp/crab larvae am I - Saturday, August 3, 2013 2:35 AM

I was collecting some shrimp larvae last night, thinking that they were Lysmata amboinensis.  However the adults were hiding and this morning I have noticed that they are both still carrying eggs.  There was an additionally type of larvae also collected.

The shrimps/crabs that are in the tank are
Lysmata amboinensis (unlikely)
Lysmata vittata  (unlikely)
Palaemon serenus / serrifer known locally as glass shrimp or boxer shrimp.
Hitch hiker black crabs of some sort (there are three or four in the tank)
Hitch hiker cream/white crab (I did find a fresh molt of one of these yesterday)
Hitch hiker pistol shrimp and possible mantis shrimp?

I think the majority of the fry collected are Lysmata vittata

Then there are the odd ones that I would like to identify

These fry are about 3-4mm long and they are attracted to light (but less than the Lysmata vittata) and will "hang" from the water surface with their heads down.
They are very quick swimmers and until I looked at them with the camera, I was thinking that they were a fish larvae/prolarvae from their swimming motion.

Any suggestions would be great.

What kind of hermit crabs do you have in this tank?

There are no hermits in the tank as far as I am aware. I did get quite a few hitchhiker crabs with the rock, so it's possible but I haven't seen any.

Well I collected some more larvae tonight, this time they were the Lysmata amboinensis.  Again the odd larvae were present.  In total about 40-60 again.  Similar numbers to two nights ago.

Both nights the fry were near the middle rock pile.  This rock pile houses, all three shrimp types (L. amboinensis, L. vittata and the P. serenus/serrifer).

Unless the other crabs are breading like crazy, I'm thinking that these can only be the the Palaemon serenus or Palaemon serrifer larvae.

Its possible, but they are very big larvae if thats the case.  They are longer than the Lysmata larvae, I have not measured them, but I would guess 3mm.
The ones I have collected look to be taking NHBBS, they have both NHBBS and rotifers in green water so hopefully they will develop into something identifiable.

In a couple of days Ill get some more photos of them if they are still going.
