Re: Breeding Journal, Species: Clibanarius tricolor

Tonight I did a water change on the pitcher with the older batch and looked at the larva that are left. Still at least five. The five that I saw were hanging on to some shells. I tried to even pull them off with a baster to get a closer look at them and they were holding on so tight that I couldn't pull them up. Hopefully that means they will settle soon. Probably while I'm gone this weekend.

Sort of crazy...I abandoned the water pitcher that had the hermits in it. I stopped seeing them awhile ago and never saw any in any of the shells. The pitcher sat with no water changes and no feeding for...perhaps two weeks (maybe more). Last night I went to dump it and thought I should check one last time. Sure enough, there were still two alive and they STILL haven't settled! It's day 79 or so (I will have to double check that). So I added an adult hermit yesterday and have them in the 1 gallon "settling bowl" that I have used successfully with the M. forceps crabs. Perhaps soon. Eeesh. It probably has not helped one little bit that they have not been in heated water this entire time. Also, probably did not help that they weren't fed for the last several weeks...they have bbs and phyto once again. I haven't collected any new larvae either. I just started putting the snagger back in the tank again last night so hopefully soon I will have some more to work with.

Well, that last attempt made it to day 80+ but I never saw any settled juveniles and the megalopa disappeared shortly after adding the adult. I collected some C. tricolor larvae from the snagger this morning and set them up in an inverted 3L water bottle with broodstock water bubbling with rigid airline tubing. That was then set in a heated water bath for temperature control. I added nhbbs and nanno this morning. We shall see how this attempt goes.

Today is day for these guys. I sort of let them slip for a few days because I didn't see any, but yesterday I dumped the water pitcher out and there were still hundreds. It amazed me because I hadn't added any nhbbs for days and days. They got a 100% water change and some nhbbs and tetraselmis and nanno. I found one that was chomping on a brine shrimp that was easily 2x it's size and had half eaten it and put it on a slide for some pics, but by the time I got the microscope set up with the camera, it had let the brine shrimp go.

I've been chugging along slowly with these guys. The last run I posted about disappeared at some point...can't remember how many days in. I have a new run going that is actually several hatches combined because I was short on space. Last night they got a water change (I have been trying to do a 100% every other day) and I pulled a few of the largest ones for pics. They look like the are Z3 or Z4. I would be able to tell better if I had seen one flipped over on it's back, but I didn't have the time to try to manipulate them on the slide.

Today during the water change I found some that are definitely Z4, and I'm pretty sure the pics in the last post are actually Z3. There were probably ten or so, and then a similar number of Z3s. Z4 (I think!)
