Buncha jerks
-
Monday, September 9, 2013 10:17 PM
My 1-1.25" Perculas are starting to kill each other. I made their space smaller by using a divider to squish them into half of their 10-gallon tank. They used to have the whole 10-gallon tank. There are about 30 of them. They get fed 4x per day to the point that there is always a bit of uneaten food on the bottom that I siphon out. They are killing off one a day. How do I stop the little jerks?

Are they KILLING each other, or is something like disease at play? MY percs are mean, but I wouldn't go so far as to say murderous.

Nope, they are murderous little buggers. I had a batch of percs from a friend who raised them. I had to separate them in pairs, or I would lose one a day. In pairs they will do fine. Once they get of a size/age that they are ready to breed, they will start killing one another off, until there are two. Actually, i once had 3 perculas living peacefully in a pond basket in a larger tank. I sold off many of their siblings, so thought they would be happier with more water to swim in. WRONG. I let them have a whole 10 gallons to themselves, and soon there were only 2. Bullies. Black ocellaris get this way as well, and even the orange ocellaris will develop a bully mentality. If you remove the bully, another one shows up from the ranks of the persecuted. Kinda like humans.

Mine did that, too. They would run one out of the tank (finding a hole or into the overflow) per day. Even in pairs, they are quite rude to each other. It makes sense, though. The bigger one has to limit the food intake of the smaller one until the size difference is pronounced.

Hmm, so there really isn't anything I can do? They aren't big enough to sell yet. They don't have their third stripe full yet.

I've used pond baskets suspended in the tanks to divide and conquer. One can even divide the pond basket with needlepoint plastic tied on with zip ties. Put two fish per side, 4 to a basket. Its a thing to try.

Really Tal? Hmm. They still need to grow a bit. I don't sell them until they are a solid 1.5". I might have to try that Kathy, I don't have a lot of "spares" to sacrifice to the murderous gang.

I would try and sell them now. Every one that dies is less and less profit you make. If you sell to your local store and they know that you have good fish then they might be willing to take them in at a little smaller size. Wholesale is the way to go to git rid of a lot more fish at a smaller size. just my 2 cents :-) Good Luck!!

I've got about 100 in a 29 gallon all together with not much aggression. Rarely do I find a dead one, maybe one every 2 months.
