This first post should be updated regularly to include new information as events take place or changes are made to your system General Species: Nannochloropsis oculata Species description: non motile green single cell 1-2u. Culture source (link if possible ): ShannPeach Fellow Hobbyist If algae, CCMP # (Optional ): http://ccmp.bigelow.edu/ Culture Establishment Date: 9/7/2013 Continuation Date: current ongoing culture Culturing Vessel Details Salinity: 1.017-1.023 Temperature: 76-78 pH: 7.5-7.9
Vessel description: 1.78L Bottles Lighting description: 2 T12 Fluorescent Bulbs in a ceiling mount fixture mounted behind the bottles. Bottles spaced 1-2 inches from light. Lighting cycle: 16 hours on, 8 off Aeration description: rapid bubbling Methodologies Split methodology: Keep 1/3-1/2 of the culture in bottles and then add F2. Culture medium description: (this could range, example with algae could be “10ml per l of guillards F formulation” or with A. tonsa it would be more like “300ml per day of algal mixture containing gymnodynium, tetraselmis, isochrysis, and rhodomonas” ) Cell count: Dark Before Each Split Reference links: Additional Information (No Pictures or Videos in the Section Please) Notes: I have pictures after each culture date from 9/7-9/16. Bottle number 3 is from the original culture date 9/7 and was darker one to two days ago but now seems to have faded a bit. You will be required to provide photographic evidence and as much detail as possible about your project in this thread.
If your thread does not contain detailed enough photos and information the MBI Council will not be able to approve your reports.

Hey Dr. Don- you need to throw a the species name in the title where [insert species name here] is... just go and 'edit' your first message, that way we all know what it is your working with and what journal your working with!
Also, your pics should be in following posts, just not the very first one, you can even load them straight onto here so the pics are super easy to see for us, so we can track your progress and encourage you along the way!

On September 7th I started to culture Nannochloropsis oculata from a starter given to me by ShannPeach. I divided the starter in half, filled most of the container with prepared saltwater at SG 1.017 added F2 Formulation from Florida Aqua Farms with constant air bubbling in my containers.

On September 12th I split one of the original containers and began using the extracted Nannochloropsis oculata in my display tank. The remaining half I filled with prepared saltwater SG 1.019 and 1mm of F2 Formulation from Florida Aqua Farms and had constant air bubbling.

On September 16th I cut the batch of Nannochloropsis oculata in one of the bottles into thirds. At this point I now have three bottles that are newly started and one that remains from the first batch started on September 7th. The new bottles were started using the same method as before. The remaining portion of the bottle I filled with prepared saltwater SG 1.019 and 1mm of F2 Formulation from Florida Aqua Farms and had constant air bubbling.  The darker bottle labeled #3 is from the 9/7/2013 batch.

I love that the labels are still on those tea bottles... makes me want to go drink some green tea!

The only reason I left them no was to have the volume since it is not exactly 2L.
The really funny thing is that my wife has already warned me that I have to explain to everyone what is consumable by humans when they come out for the holidays.

LOL!!!! My husband says the same thing! We had a very unfortunate misunderstand when family was up for my daughters birthday and some nano in the fridge! WOOPS!!!

Today is 11/25 I am continuing to culture 3 bottles of Nannochloropsis oculata and have split the culture most recently on 11/11. I am finding that I do not need to be as diligent in splitting the culture without a crash of my culture as indicated in most of the literature. Here are my dates for splitting the culture of which I discard half of the bottle and then save a small portion for my display tank (start 9/7, 9/12, 9/16, 9/21, 10/15, 10/13, 11/11. To date I have not had a crash and am only keeping three bottles going due to my inexperience and wanting to prevent losing my entire culture.
