Critique my photos please

I fixed up a small fish tank to take pics of the fish. I painted the back white on this one. I think some of the fish would look best with black background, some would look best with white, and some with blue...hard to say! Please let me know what you think of my photos and how I can make them better. Comments and critique on the fish is welcome too. Camera is a Canon G9. Semi-Picasso: Premium Snowflake: Extreme Snowflake (this one was raised on TDO, big difference, eh?):

The best pictures seem to be those that have the eyes in focus. as long as you are not trying to highlight another particular aspect of the fish. You have a couple of pictures of a pair black snowflakes in your gallery that are excellent. HTH

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...or something like that. I would go with the black background. I'm still testing, but looks like an off-camera flash, with a high f-stop (11-20) is the way to go for me. Again, still fiddling with it... Your photos are very nice though...

You could get colored sheets of acrylic to be able to fit inside the tank against the back pane. That would allow you to use one tank and you could have a multitude of background colors. Just a preference perhaps but the top fish pics typically don't show any reflection that I seem to recall. Maybe the same removable pieces to cover the ends as well to make it easier for you to get a pic. If you are trying for artsy pics though the reflection could be pretty neat if you do it right.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Good idea Daniel! I suppose it would cut reflection if I used acrylic pieces inside the tank. The reflection was driving me nuts and the seams of the tank too. I wasn't getting great focus either. I will try my other camera.

By using a coloured acrylic backing, you can also put it in, let the fish settle and then move the backing towards the front of the tank. This will limit the fish's ability to swim deeper into the tank. You will be able to achieve better focus across the entire fish as it will tend to be perpendicular to the camera lens. As others have said, make sure the focus point is on the eye of the fish, so it looks more natural/cute. Other than that, practice, practice and some more practice. The shots look good. Its such a hard thing to get them looking good, I struggle with it all the time.
