WTB Apocyclops panamensis Pods - Monday, September 23, 2013 10:42 PM
I've run out of options! I've tried my local dealer, but there were so many contaminates I couldn't get a good culture out of it.

Thanks!

Amph

Apparently, Algagen is never going to bring these to market.  Not enough perceived demand.

What kind of contaminants are you fighting?  Apocyclops are really, really hard to starve to death.  They would probably readily outlive anything else if you just starved the culture for a week or two.

Another option is to use a dissecting microscope or other similar (25x to 50x) magnifier and just pipette out 10-20 gravid females into fresh media.  If the little buggers are too fast for you, you might try anesthetizing them with a mild magnesium chloride solution.  If you use a mild enough dose (less than 3%), they will recover when transferred into the fresh media.

Contaminates include other pods mostly, I may try your starvation idea and see if that would work, if my local place still has any

Tisbe's, Tiggers, my dealer isn't too bright on BioSecurity...He takes his pods directly out of his 40g reef....WITH corals and fish and the whole shabang, and for the most part he doesn't know what he pulls out, because he never looks at em with a scope

His just don't seem quite as hardy as my first culture. I've gone through 3 and each never made it past a week

Sweet, I think it was just something weird with his pods I don't really know what's going on, but I don't have any more local people that sell apocyclops anymore
