Help with identifying clownfish - Friday, December 20, 2013 9:41 PM

Greetings,
Any chance someone out there might know what type of clownfish this is?  It was given to me and I'm now trying to breed it.  Thanks in advance...

Looks like a SA Fancy Ocellaris. The head stripe is the main identifier for those.

I agree, SA fancy ocellaris. There is a large degree of variation in the amount of white in these.

Thanks for your help.  No chance it's wild, right?

You can say with a vey high degree of certainty it's not wild caught.

its a percula picasso
the fancy strain never has spots in the white patches unless mixed with snowflakes
thick black outlines
bright orange rim on the eye seals the deal

what do i win ?

Hello joebean!  You had me wondering about the eyes, so much that I had a closer look.  I think the camera flash had something to do with the photos I posted.  When I find a little time, I'm going to take a few more shots and count the dorsal spines to be sure.  Thanks for your comments and photos of your babies (nice).  Hopefully, I'll have eggs shortly because they seem to be doing the dance and cleaning of the pot right now.

I'm going to disagree with the Picasso ID on this fish; I do not see the "bright orange" rims to the eyes but the more dusky typically associated with Ocellaris.  In the first photo I also count 11 dorsal spines, which would make the fish Ocellaris.

That said these days, for all you know it could be a hybrid combination of the two, which is why keeping track of NAMES is now so darn important.  In the orchid word, the plant equivalent to this fish, coming without an identification attached, would render the orchid worthless from a breeding standpoint.

I can only say this about Fancy Ocellaris....I have seen 3rd party evidence that possibly a wild one was found in recent years.  Can't say more at this time, but I think we're having to start rethinking some of our stance against "man made" designers, afterall Lightnings = found in the wild, Picassos = Found in the wild...so arguably both are part of the natural biodiversity (no more or less so than the Orange-Blotch forms of certain African Cichlid species).

I would not breed it simply because you cannot be certain it is not hybrid.

I had about 5 very nice broodstock fish over the last year that I got from local breeders in the Texas area and no one could provide lineage and as a result I parted with the fish. Some of them were spawners and others just very nice but they had to go.

I had two Picassos that I wanted to pair with a couple wild caught onyx perc females to make onyx Picassos but I couldn't be certain the fish weren't hybrids.  The two I had just looked a bit off to me almost artificial if that makes any sense.  They were "super Picassos" with lots of white, much like Doni's snowcassos.

Anyways, nice looking fish but I would part with it if you cannot be certain of what it is.

I'm not really a hybrid hater but as a breeder I just want to know exactly what I have so my customers will know what they have when they purchase from me.
