Banggai female holding eggs !!! - Monday, January 6, 2014 3:49 PM
0
I have a pair that have spawned 3 times previously, the male has never held past 8 days. They spawned again yesterday and the female is holding the eggs instead of the male.
Just to be clear I am 110% sure it is the female as the male is darker and much larger than her.

Has anyone seen this before ?

To answer your question - I have never heard of or read about a female holding eggs.

The triangle on the nose, however, indicates a man

I only have 1 pair, the male is very dark compared to the female and larger. The second picture is 100% the female. Today she is holding far fewer  eggs, her jaw is simply not designed to hold in the same way as the male.
The picture of the male above shows his colouration much darker than my female.

I have seen two different reports of kept alone females spawning and holding.
In both cases eggs were pale.

Of all my pairs, only one of them does anything like this. My female flares her jaw and tries to hold clutches, but as the days inch on, she swallows or drops more and more, never passing day 7. Although when I look at her dropped eggs under the scope, they are fertilized and growing. So, although it's possible, I don't know how probable it is for the female to carry to full.

Thanks for the share though.
