Pulling Eggs upon Spawn Questions

Good Afternoon All, For some reasons, my clowns have decided to wait until a day before or day of hatch to go all "Donner Party" on them. Then last night, I lost 200 Frenatus after hatching and my trap did not catch a single one. So, I am going to pull the tiles/pots but have a few questions. I pull it day one (first notice the eggs), do you still use Methyl Blue (we did in the old days, one dose per water volume used)? Do you still use 1/2 a 10 G tank of parent water with the Methyl Blue? Slight Bubble with wood "skimmer style" stones or has a new process emerged? Standard Parent Tank Temp/Light Cycle? No water changes during the 8 day incubation? What about Methyl Blue in hatch fry tank, does it harm the Rotifers or should it be dissipated by then? Any other suggestions? I've lost 400-600 eggs this week from Black Photons, Onyx and Frenatus.... Not a good week. Thank you!

I would certainly suggest waiting as long as you can to pull, it would definitely help to wait. When I had problems with this (and i've had this with several types of clowns) but most notable my cinnamons and clarkiis I'd pull on night 5 or 6 and do a blue dip, then into a hatch out tank, worked for me.

Thanks. My problem is that the Black Photon female freaks out when you enter the fish room and eats a mouth full of eggs, and in a few days they are all gone. When you say blue dip, can you describe the process? In the old days (read 90's) we put the blue in with the eggs and what I can't remember is what we did, if anything to remove it prior to hatch. Thanks Justin

ah, yeah there can be some really easily spooked fish out there... I have several banggai's that'll do that too. Have you tried letting another pair raise them? I have a pair of oce's that'll care for any nest I give them- including multiple nests. Might be worth a shot. As for blue dip, I've done both ways, dip and go to clean water, and also the blue straight in with the eggs. it never seemed to hurt either way. I just have a hard time judging tinting for food with live algae if blue is in the water. so I do a dip (just following the instructions on the bottle) and call it good. Now a days I just use other fish to care for the nest or let it go if no one will care for it. I don't have anything that nice to NEED to do this for. you know.

Parental diet and water quality can have an effect on egg quality too. How long have the pairs been spawning?

Tal, The Photons have been spawning for years for a previous owner. I've had two spawns, the first one she was very aggressive and agitated the week after of the lay, and the fever pitch of the anger peaked the day of hatch and ate all of them. I put a camera (on my Apex) on the cube she's in and when not in the room, she's normal, walk in the room, she goes nuts. The first batch and this last one, the eggs matured and were healthy looking. When the eggs are gone, she is exhibits normal behavior. The water is darn near reef quality. 1.026, 85 Degrees, PH 8.05, O ammonia, 0 Nitrite, undetectable Phos and Nitrate. The system is a set of connected tanks on a central sump running an Algal Turf Scrubber. The other pairs (Picasso and Onyx) don't have this issue. I feed 4x daily a 50% protein, 7% fat food, and 5x weekly a frozen/fresh mix. The clutches are 200-300 and tightly packed, bright orange in color. The eggs silver up and they appear to be healthy until she eats them all up in a fit of anger. Thanks! Justin

could you wrap the tank in cloth so she can't see you come and go in the room where they are in? I have a couple tanks wrapped in black felt/velcro so I don't spook 'em. if possible, might help.

That's a great idea and also the one where you give the nest to calm pair to incubate.
