Ocellaris breeding pair not laying?

Hey everyone, I purchased a breeding pair of Ocellaris (guaranteed breeders, around 5-6 years old), 7 months ago and added them to my brood stock system (1x110L tank, 12x60L tanks), the fish seem comfortable enough, both hosting in a pot, eating well, but they still haven't laid. Water quality is good, I have other pairs in the system laying frequently. My question is, how long should I give them before splitting them up, and pairing with other fish? Thanks, Dave

Have you tried egg fostering? This has worked really well for me to spur a pairing into laying when I know they are ready, but they just won't take the leap.

Hadn't thought of that. I've got some GSM eggs hatching tomorrow night, they'll lay again in a couple of days and I'll swap pots with the Ocellaris pair. Thanks for the help.

I hope it works for you. It's my belief that clowns lean toward being a temperate water species. That is, of all the salt water fish I've known they are the ones that seem to need some specific environmental cues to get them in the mood for breeding. Add in the fairly large larvae and relatively easy to rear larvae and that sounds much more like temperate species to me. Most tropical fish aren't like that at all.

Added the GSM eggs today, but the Ocellaris ate them all. I'll give it another try as soon as the GSM's lay again.

If they are in the same system than laying pairs they should have started breeding. Yo can try lowering temp to 26/27c for one week and then increase it to 30c for two weeks. Some times an increase in water temperature makes them start breeding. If they are already at high temp they don´t "feel" summer comming. Julio

Nothing stands out in your parameters. I think a raise in temperature for a bit might be a good idea too. If not, kick them out and find a new pair. Then you will get the email 3 weeks later that they spawned.

We had a few really hot days over christmas, and the tanks where over 30c for a couple of days, so raising the temp has been tried, though not by choice. So back to my original question, how long do you guys give a pair before splitting them up, and pairing with other fish? GSM's should lay again today, so I'll try the egg fostering again as soon as they do.

My pairs will quit spawning after extreme hot weather, often for months.

When I moved my tanks it took 10 month for them to resume laying eggs (al of the fish). Now every fish starts laying in less than 6 month. If you have space add a new pair and keed them. If not I´d keep them a few months. In my case when a young couple starts laying it takes 1/2 month to start producing quality eggs. How many pairs do you have? If you have 13 tanks for brodstock with 13 laying pairs you will be able to produce tons of fish! Julio

Got 7 pairs at the moment, I have tank space to keep them, so I'll give them some more time. The GSM's laid again today, I waited until the lights went out this time before moving the eggs, hoping that might help.

I wait for at least 30 min to move the eggs. I think that the parens get stressed when they see you taking out their babies.

For me, how long I try to get them spawning for depends how bad I want the eggs from the pair. I have a pair of Galaxy Clarkii that I don't think I will ever give up on. Ocellaris are easy to replace, so I wouldn't try longer than about 6 months with an already proven pair. If you have the tank space though, then there is no reason to quit. I say buy a second Ocellaris pair and see who spawns first.
