Re: Breeding Journal, Species:Corythoichthys haematopterus (Western Pacific) or intestinalis (Indonesian) - Sunday, March 9, 2014 9:42 AM
I've seen his floor resting behavior off and on for the last couple of days. I am begining to think there is a difference between the laying down completely, head and tail to the floor, and this resting posture with head and sometimes tail raised up. Head down is bad, indicating he is not well, and death will follow, and head up, just adult posturing, just him growing up. That's what I'm hoping for, anyway. Perhaps just wishful thinking.

It's easier to take pictures in the new aquarium, even though the sides are covered in algae.  Sometimes he "rests" by clinging to the sides of the aquarium and grazing on the pods that he finds there.

That last picture sure does look like normal adult posturing.  Good work, Kathy, and good luck with him!

i remember last week when his head was white and fuzzy.  Now there are definite dragon scribbles!  He looks like a snake with fins.

Sadly, Crooktail did not make it. RIP, Crooktail. 47 days old, or 6.5 weeks. I'll put up some pictures later today. Bummer.  :-(

My store got 3 adults for me.  By the way the name of the store is Seascape Studios.  If you are ever in St. Louis, you gotta see this place.
One has a redish snout, one is lighter in the body, and one is darker.  Redhead, Blondie, and Brunette.  Now I've named them, drat, the kiss of death… Sorry Jim.
Pix were from the acclimation bucket, perhaps the best ones I'll get.

Here's the reddish snout.  There are reddish spots on the body as well.

Here's the fish camouflaged in the sand of this tank.  I did see them snicking at the pods in this tank, so I think they may be reasonably happy.  Now lets hope I have a mixture of sexes among the three fish.

Good luck with them, Kathy!  Keeping them well fed is obviously the first task.

Are you sure they are all the same species?  I have such a hard time with IDing the dragonface pipes (well, I have a hard time with all seahorses and pipefish...)

I have to ask the same question as Shannon; Blondie and Brunette look like the same species; Red looks like a different one.  Unless there's sexual dichromatism and/or it's a matter of mood-influenced coloration.

I was thinking the same thing. Even snouts are different. Blondie and Brunette have upturned ones, whereas Red's is straight, and red. I love the belly pattern on Red.  I'll look into it.  Maybe Red is a member of haemato-something species...

I think the red one is hematopterus.

Today I introduced frozen cyclopeze.  I thawed it in a little of their tank water and put some near the sand with a transfer pipet.  The cyclopeze instantly rose up in the water column, suspending itself.  The pipefishes responded immediately by swimming into body of water, and snicking at invisible food particles.  I think we have feeding!.  If so, that is awesome, as I can keep frozen cyclopeze in stock and not run out of live copepods for them.  I can get more pipes as well, so increasing my chances of having one male and one female!  Happy, I am.

Since the last post, I bought anothe larger pipefish, and it died within 2 days, and the following week I bought 3 more, of which 2 died within a week. So I am down to the 3 originals, and one smaller newish one.  Actually, I don't have much hope for the smaller newish one.  When the others are swimming around snicking, this one pretty much stays put.

I've discovered that they like rotifers. Since I always have a lot of them, it is now a daily feed. They get rotifers in the morning when I am pressed for time, and copepods of various types in the evening. They get mostly Parvocalanus, and sometimes they get tigriopus, tisbe, or tangerine.  I have a small culture of Pseudodiaptimus, but there is not enough to feed out.

The problem with ordering pods from Algagen, is that they arrive in a beautiful "store shelf ready" retail bottle with nice tight cap and about 5 ml of air at the top.  After a 2 day shipment without food or air, these things arrive at their destination mostly dead.  Why can't they ship these things like the live critters they are?  Sorry for the rant. I do love Algagen, just getting tired of buying dead copepods. :-(

It's taken me two weeks to get the precious few Pseudos that survived to mate and reproduce so I have maybe 50 pods in culture at the moment.

Anyway, the pipefishes seem to be doing well, the ones that didn't die, that is.

Have you fed nhbbs or enriched bbs?

And I agree about the Algagen pods...the packaging is not ideal :/

On Tuesday I received 2 pairs of DF pipefishes from DRs F &S ! They are beautiful, and in quarantine now. They are a slightly different species, so I'll have to start a new report on them.
