Turbo snail eggs - Monday, February 17, 2014 9:23 PM

I got some turbo snail eggs from a tank at my LFS and was wondering if anyone knows how long they take to hatch or how to raise them if they do hatch. Thanks, Greg

Well, I can't speak for JRC (Whom I talked about almost the exact same thing, snails), but I'd go with as many microalgae species as you can. I've got cerith's setup with some tetraselmis and isochrysis at the moment, and are doing fine. One thing we talked about though, is that usually the adult snails will release a hormone that allows the babies to get into settlement... Not sure if this is true with Turbos, but it could be. As far as hatching goes, with my cerith's I just stuck them in a water bottle full of tank water, and let it sit for around 4-5 days. The larvae will appear as ittybitty dots inside the bottle, and there will be TONS of them. I've been keeping my veligers (babies) in the waterbottle, until I think they should be moved to something bigger, probably around week 3-4.

Do you use an airline in the bottle? I want to try raising some of my ceriths sometime.

I don't, probably should. They hatch fine though without any tumbling, but seeing as to how there is live algae in there, it couldn't hurt. I'll probably start doing that at a very slow bubble rate (~1 bubble per second or lower)

Are turbo larva pelagic? If not I have something else in with my turbo eggs.

Yes, snail larvae are mostly all pelagic if I believe.
