Clownfish eggs turning white - Wednesday, March 5, 2014 5:24 PM

Okay my clownfish laid a fairly nice size clutch after waiting months after months since I moved them to their own tank and of course three days later a lot of them have turned white and I am assuming that is fungus on them.

What causes this to happen?
And how can I correct it from happening again on the next clutch or clutches?

This is fungus caused by improper aeration. It's best to leave the eggs with the parents as long as possible and pull them on the night you expect them to hatch.

The eggs are with the parents. She laid the eggs on Monday. They are both tending to the clutch. Which normally I see mustly the male tending to the clutch.

Usually the white eggs are eggs that were not fertilized.  Sometimes it is because it is just a young male, or that the fish were being distracted while laying eggs, or could sometimes be because the water flow in that area is to strong (would probably have to be really strong, so I doubt that would be the problem).  I would just give them some time.

They have been breeding together since Nov 2012. They have had white eggs before but it was only two or three this time it is half of the clutch.

Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you moved the eggs, not the pair.

I would like to post a picture here but I can't seem to find an button that says manage attachments.  I see one button on the tool bar in the Quick Reply that says Insert/edit image but when I click on it it is asking for a URL I don't have a URL for my picture that I am wanting to attach showing the eggs.

The best way is to upload your pics to a sharing site like photobucket but you can add them as an attachment by using the button that looks like a paper clip, to the left of the smiley face button. Note: you need to push the "Reply to message" button rather than using the quick reply box.

Hopefully I did it right.  Tried taking pictures of the eggs with the camera but they came out worse than with my cell phone which was not much better.

If they haven't laid in awhile, I would assume they just did a poor job.  I would wait to see how the next clutch looks.  If the next clutch is also has lots of fungus then look at potential problems.  In my (limited) experience, most egg problems arise from broodstock diet and water quality.

Thanks.  I am too leaning towards the water quality being an issue right now. Since I have not been able to clean their tank properly. Once I clean it and they do that again.  I will be switching the male out.

One poor spawn doesn't justify switching the male out in my opinion.  It could very well be more your fault than his.

True EasterEgg.  But they have been spawning since Nov 2012 and I have only had one fairly decent batch to live and they are now 8 months old.  There would have been maybe three others but I was new at collecting them and I did not think it was the fry that was hatching because they just did not look the same and guess what it was them.  It would have been a huge batch too.
So I don't know if it is me or them because by the time it is hatch night only about 50 eggs are left if even that much at times.
I moved them to their own tank a while back in hopes this would help correct the problem but it hasn't.
Any other suggestions would be very helpful I just don't know what else to do.

I don't think moving them around was a good idea.  Are they in their own tank?  Were they before?  What do you feed them?  How many times per day?  What is the nitrate level?  Temperature?  Light cycle?

I have a couple pairs of Percula that took about 6-8 months to produce nice nests, but they are the two most consistent spawners in my whole fish room now.  There are times when the fish go on a bit of a hiatus, and those two Perc pairs are always among the ones that keep plugging along.  Patience and consistency is the biggest key imo, with food and water quality close behind.

They had been in the main dt before I took them out... I thought since they were in the big tank they were having to compete for the food and my sail fin is the champion when it comes to eating everyone's food before they can get to it. So that is when I made the decision to move them to their own tank thinking this will help but it hasn't.
The food I feed them is NSL Thera A, regular NSL tiny pellets, home made fish food from time to time, frozen Mysis, some frozen cyclopeez when I can find it.  They did not like the Rod's breeding food. Not sure on the nitrate level since I change their water every two weeks.  And you are correct they lay eggs like clock work.  I tried to setup last night to collect what eggs were left but none hatched by the time I went to bed.  I will see if there are any eggs left when I go home for lunch.

So how many nests have they laid since you moved them?  How long ago did you move them?

In regards to them not liking the Rod's Food, my fish eat what I want them to eat.  They are in their own cubicle and if I want them to eat something they don't like then that food will be the only food they get sometimes for weeks until they are eating it voraciously.  Sometimes I will get a few small spawns because they aren't eating enough to produce good spawns.  My fish are used to this now, and will eat anything I put in there for them.  I think they figured out my strategy!  Haha!

Do you feed your fish as much as they will consume 2-3 times per day?  I usually feed everyone a portion, and by the time I'm done the first round I go back to the first tank and feed everyone again.  I will do 3-5 rounds feeding a smaller portion each time to make sure everyone is stuffed.  Some of my pairs I know are only good for 3 rounds, and some are good for 4-5 rounds.  The best spawners are the ones that eat the most.  My fish eat almost exclusively my homemade mash because I get the best results off this diet and also because there are too many mouths - it costs too much to feed them a prepared feed.

This pair eats 5 rounds 3 times per day.

Good Morning EasterEggs sorry I have not been online the last few days.  My son & I ended up with food poison.
Now to answer your questions the best I can.
I moved them from the DT back in August 2013 to a ten gallon tank with a small clay pot they did not lay any eggs for about 2-3 months then when they did finally start laying eggs the batches were pretty small and I figured it was probably because the pot was to small and they did not have enough room to move around in it so I went and got the next size bigger.
Batch sizes increased by a very tiny bit. So in December I got lucky and got a 36gallon bowfornt tank for $30 and switch out the tanks.  Trying to make it look more like a nice little home It kind of throw them off schedule for a little while but started back up in December laying eggs like clock work small batches but no white eggs.  I would say anywhere’s from 2 to 3 batches per month and by the time hatch night comes there are only about 20 eggs left. So I did not bother to try to collect any.

Food…. I like that ideal if they don’t like it only feed that to them until they are eating it voraciously but the Rod’s food is $20 and I don’t really like that price tag on fish food. Unless it is the combo pack from PE – Mysis-Cylopeeze combo pack.  I try feeding them like the small but freguent feedings probably not as much as you are doing though.. The male will only come out of the pot to get two maybe three pellets he does not eat like the female does.  I just recently started adding to their feeding something called Substainable Hatchery Diet food someone told me it was good for them.
I need to find the auto fishfeeder that I bought a while back this will help while I am at work.

What is your homemade mash made out of? So I can make it and feed that to them as well.

What is the secret to getting the eggs  to hatch on one night?  Mine will hatch a few on day 7, more on day 8 and close to the rest of the eggs on day 9 and maybe two or three eggs are still hanging on on day 10.  Then once all the eggs are gone they will lay another batch within 2-3 days after the last ones are gone.

Oh by the way those are very nice looking eggs.

Mary I think you have a water quality problem.  And since this is the first batch since it's been a while this is totally normal.  Let them lay 2 or 3 hatches before you try to raise any fry.  This way the parents can get used to being parents.  Your only fry you've raised honestly... should have been culled.  There were so many misbars and growth rate was very slow slow  .... water quality!

Those fry grew into very nice looking fish.  They were about 8 months old when I finally sold them except three that should have been culled because they have flared gills but they have turned into some pretty fish just wish they did not have flared gills..  And a lot of places sell misbar clowns  .
