Raising clownfish eggs with under gravel filter

I was wondering whether it would help to install an under gravel filter on a 20 gallon with only a window screen over it and reverse flow power head running slow as I have read about fungus on the bottom of tanks killing eggs and/or larvae. Clownish

In an ideal situation you will leave the eggs with the parents until they are ready to hatch. Fungus usually occurs when you remove the eggs, on a tile or pot, and don't aerate them properly until they hatch.

Thank you Fishtal. I especially liked the dance of the silver Rotifers. All very good information.

Another thing, an undergravel filter would potentially trap the larvae. You don't want anything in the tank for them to get in their way. A sponge filter can be added after they settle.

Fishtal: I was planning on purchasing a show size breeder's pair of wild caught Premnas Biaculeatus this week. Other possible choices: 1) Australian/Darwin's Black Ocellaris (Amphiprion ocellaris) Jumbo/Breeder Size Pair 2) Australian Clarkii (A. Clarkii) Bonded Pair - Breeder Size 3) Allard's Clown Fish (A. Allardi) Large Bonded Pair 4) Allard's Clown - Comoro Islands (A. allardi) Large Bonded Pair 5) Barrier Reef Anemone Fish (Amphiprion akindynos) SM PAIR 6) Barrier Reef Anemone Fish (Amphiprion akindynos) Breeders Size Pair 7) Black Clarkii Melanistic (A. Clarkii) PAIR Bonded Pair Breeder Size 8) Black Onyx True Percula (A. Percula) BD-PAIR Small/Medium Pair 9) B lue Stripe (A. Chrysopterus) Fiji-PAIR Large Bonded Pair $290.00 show size pair 10) Ocellaris / False Percula PAIR (A. Ocellaris) Wild Caught J-PAIR Jumbo Pair Any thoughts? A week ago I purchased two 2" wild caught True Perculas which I hope to have a spawning pair in a year. Clownish

It kinda depends on how much space you have and how you plan to sell the juveniles... Darwin's and regular A. ocellaris are usually a good investment, as are Onyx. The others have a much more limited market. If you plan on selling to your LFS's I'd check with them to see what they're interested in. I'd look into other types of fish besides clowns. Maybe dottybacks, gobies, blennies, seahorses, etc., rather than doing only clowns.

Thank you Fishtal. Could find an interesting fish other than clowns for one of the 20 gallon tanks or one of the 29 gallons. Clownish

Fishtal: My 10 year old pair of mated Tomato clownfish have just laid another clutch of orange eggs three days ago next to one of the two red rose bubble tips they call home. They are laid on a very large piece of live rock which would disrupt the anemone if taken from the tank and probably were laid during the day although I cannot be sure as I noticed them when I returned home from work. I usually just let them alone as they turn silver with black eyes. Should I document the transformation of the eggs from orange to silver? I will be receiving my two Gold Stripe Premnas Biaculeatus that were caught in the Borneo area of East Malaysia as a mated pair. They are between 2 and 3 years of age. In the future I plan on acquiring a wild caught mated pair of yellow tail Amphiprion chrysopterus for the bottom 29 gallon tank. clownish

Sure. Take pics and start journals for all of your pairs. Journals not only help others they will help you keep track of things.

Fishtal: I was successful with my Amphiprion frenatus pair journal. I have to add my recent two inch pair of wild caught Amphiprion percula. It will be a while before they spawn. Tomorrow I am receiving a 2-3 year old wild caught pair of gold striped Premnas Biaculeatus from the Borneo region. Clownish

Does anybody know what settings are required in photobucket so that they can be displayed on the MBI Web site. I have to use my Facebook account because I cannot get a photobucket picture to post? clownish

Thank you Fishtal. I found a $23 dollar generic 58mm Altura Professional Super Fisheye Wide Angel Lens w/ Macro Close Up close up lens on Amazon that had good reviews for close ups for my "old" Cannon Rebel 6.1 digital camera. Big excitement here as my other two lens could not give a good close up. clownish
