Species Firsts! - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 8:41 PM
0
Part of the MBI's goal is to promote captive breeding of new species that haven't been done before and to recognize the efforts of those that succeed. To be granted a species first award, the breeder must be able to provide proof of the date of the success via a verifiable third party publication including, books, scientific journals, online forums, or the MBI system. Extremely detailed Journals within the MBI are required for this award. When granted a Species First Award, a star medal will be applied over regular success icon to indicate that it is a Species First.

The MBI Council is proud to register and confirm the following Species First awards:

Oxymonacanthus longirostris: Matthew Pedersen, 2009

Sepia bandensis: Richard Ross, 2007

If you have proof of success for a species that has not been done before please fill out a journal and reports for your work and submit a request for a Species First here: http://www.mbisite.org/SFRequest.aspx

Has he filed the necessary request? I don't see anything in the admin section of the site for reviewing.

Jim's species firsts were red stripe and African blue stripe pipes correct? Without going back to check his journal I want to say his blues were identified as excisus.

My pair of blue stripes is not the African variant but the Indonesian one. I'm slowly working on an accurate ID for these. If I were to successfully ID and rear the offspring from this pair, would that qualify as a species first aside from excisus? They're most likely either melanopluera or paulus.

Thanks in advance.

Blue Stripes would not be a species first for Jim...they were done years ago, unless there is more than one blue stripe species.  Variants, no. Taxonomically unique species, yes.  That is 99.9% the MBI way - only deviation to date is A. sp. "Darwin Black"

Matt I didn't know blue stripes were done before Jim's but I'm almost certain red stripes hadn't been. .

Doryrhamphus excisus is the African blue stripe. There are Japanese blue stripes (japonicus) and a couple of other pacific ones, mostly differentiated by their tails and blue/orange ratio. By what you said above, I take it each species would qualify for its own species first?
