Changing a female clownfish back to a male?

Okay I hope this is possible. If you find a somewhat juvenile clownfish at a LFS and seems to be the dominate one “possible female” of the bunch that is the in the tank and you try to pair her up with a much older fish that is a female would it be possible for the younger one to turn into a male? The one at the LFS might be 1 ¾” maybe a year old if that and the one trying to pair it up with is over 3 ½” and about 3 years old.

They can't go from functional female back to male. However, I had a fish that was 8 years old and had been mostly kept alone and I assumed it was a female, however, when I put it with a mated pair, it turned out to still be male. I think the best you can hope for now is that the younger one has not turned into a female yet and the pairing goes well. Is the new fish captive bred?

The new fish has never breed before at least not to my knowledge it is at the lfs with several others from the order that they received. But the clerk told me it was a female and I was just hoping since it has never breed and was still very young that maybe my female that has been breeding would convince it to turn to a male... Wishful thinking..

If it really already is a female, then yeah...just wishful thinking. Can you get a smaller one than that and pair it with your current female? Or did that particular fish have characteristics you were looking for?

I liked it's markings. So I guess I will just have to keep looking for a male that has markings that I like....

If you want to pair up your larger fish with one that can breed with I'd go with a smaller one as mentioned above. The pattern on the one you liked will have little bearing on what the offspring look like. If it's some type of Picasso, for instance, it will likely pass on the gene but not a particular pattern.

If the store got a bunch of clownfish in, what makes the clerk think that one is a female? Is it significantly larger than the rest of the fish? Consider that the clerk might not know the difference between a female and a male. Frequently, it is hard to tell. If you want to try to pair them, just keep an eye on them. If you put the two together without other clownfish in the tank, and they get along, you probably have a pair. It is fairly accepted dogma, however, that a male can become a female, but an actual female will never change to being a male. Wishing will not make it so.

In the tank at the store there are like three or four larger ones maybe barely 2" and several smaller ones were like 1 1/2". I was thinking about getting one of the larger ones and put it in a QT for about 3 weeks and then place with my female and watch them very carefully and if they don't pair up take the small one out and then go and get one of the smaller ones and do the same procedure all over again.

Well I went to the store last night and I think I ended up getting a male. He is in a QT right now so he will be there for about 3 weeks maybe 2weeks all depends on how he does in there. Wasn't too many left in the tank and some of the others that were in there where larger then the one I picked out and he was not swimming with the others so I hope that was an indication of the fish being a male. Also the clerk told me it was a Percula but I am just not to sure if he is or not will post a picture and see if anyone can confirm that the clerk is correct.

Well I was going to post a picture but I don't know how to do that from my cell phone. I hope I did not get a sick fish he very seldom swims out in the open and stays upright in thecorner of the tank. I see my other baby cclownfish do this but huddled up in a group. He is eatting but very little bits. Cute little guy and love his markings.

Sorry this is not a very good picture but it was all I could get last night. He is very pale in color so I am hoping with time he will darken up.
