Switching males?
-
Wednesday, April 30, 2014 8:27 AM
How long might it take for a proven female to lay eggs with a new male in the tank? I have one female that hasn't stopped laying eggs about every-other week for the past year. I have a couple interesting ocellaris clowns that are either neutral or male that I'd like to put in with this proven mother. Is it possible that the eggs would continue like clockwork, or most likely would take another 6 or 8 months for the spawning to continue, if at all? The other clowns I'm considering are from 8 months to two years old. The mother is 4 years (WAG). Thanks for any thoughts/comments. r/

My opinion - if the new fish is a known male that is sexually mature there will be a delay but it may be slight. Once they are comfortable with each other and paired up I think they will spawn. If you were starting with an unknown juvenile as male I have heard people have success from 6-9 months.

I would go for the known male as well, and I would swap them out when there are eggs present so the new male can immediately get in the groove of nest tending. When I did that, the female spawned with the new male pretty much on schedule and I have heard some females never skip a beat.

To me timing was important I was never able to swap males when eggs are up, they need to be gone. Wait till she has a belly full of eggs, the urge to spawn will help. Sometimes a couple of introductions are required. Scoop them up in a net inside the tank so they are close and rubbing on each other.

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately, I don't have a "known" male for sure. I'm assuming one is a male, and 2 others are 8 or 10 months old. The assumed male is quite big (but smaller than the known mother) and has not tended to the eggs when I tried the double-down method. It is what I call a loner - just wants to be by itself and not intested in a mate...or at least the current mate. More to follow...
