DIY Food and Weaning - Friday, July 18, 2014 7:23 AM

Hello everyone,
Ive got two Questions.
1) I am planning to prepare my own food for conditioning the Clowns. Here are the ingredients i plan to add. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Prawns(whole, minus the head)
Crab meat
Sardine/Salmon
Hikari Seaweed Extreme, as cant find any  Nori or Seaweed here.
Anything else i should add to this mix?

2) My Maroon clown pair which i acquired recently are voracious eater. Thing is they eat only Hikari Marin pellets.
I tried feeding them frozen Artemia, bloodworms etc.. they just ignore it. Atleast the male tastes the Artemia but the female just ignores it. Any suggestions on how i can wean them to accept different foods?

Thanks and Regards

1) Your recipe looks pretty good. I'd add a bit of frozen squid to boost the fat content but not too much. You want to keep the diet balanced.

 2) Artemia isn't really a good food source unless it's enriched. I'd just offer them your mix and they will get used to it.

Sorry for the belated reply, was quiet a bit busy with the Eid preparations.
Thanks Tal for the quick reply,
@president89
I reduced the feeding of the Hikari and slowly started introducing flakes along with hikari. They eventually would spit the flakes out and eat only the Hikari pellets but slowly have started eating even the flakes and pellets from other brands. The male has started tasting frozen artemia while the females is turning her nose up.
I fell that i was rushing things up as i had them with me only for about a week before i got worried about their eating habits. Now its about a month and they are eating all types of prepared foods. The challenge now is to start them to eat frozen foods.
IMHO ,The key to get them used to other foods is to introduce it with the food they are used to eating.
Hope this helps
Thanks and Regards

I've found garlic to help.  Start soaking the food they are used to in a drop of Kent Galic Extreme or Brightwell Aquatics GarlicPower or some such thing before feeding.  Once they are used to that taste then use the garlic on the new food.  Garlic has a strong flavor and it seems to mask the new flavor well.
