pairing maroons

I have just paired my first maroons! It has been a week and a half and both fish are swimming together and not tearing each other shreds. Can they still turn on each other or should they be good?

It's a tough call, if one is much smaller than the other I say you should be good. If they are close in size you have more risk but they could be good. Really only time will tell.

I *think* they'd be good if there is ZERO fin damage.

Everything is going good. No fin damage. I haven't seen any aggressive behavior. The small one is about a inch and half. And the larger one is about 2.5 inches. Do maroons take a while to mature?

Well, officially I had some Lighting offspring start spawning at 2+ years of age..which I think is relatively short in the grand scheme of things.

Well this pair has been together for a few months now and they are doing fine. But the small males stripes are turning gold. So is it bad to keep a gold stripe with a white stripe paired together?

Not at all, you'll just end up with a mostly white striped offspring, with some oddballs mixed in.

I won't speak for him but I think Matt's recommendation would be to split. If you are breeding these to potentially sale then you have muddied the water and any future breeders would have no idea that these might be something different than what they appear to the eye.

When I bought the small one he was only 3/4 of an inch long. And the sticker said white stripe maroon. I guess they they mis labeled there fish. Man this sucks.

Don't get discouraged. There is nothing saying you can't sell the offspring. Focus on the experience of the process at the time being. It could still be months, years even before they spawn. You have time to figure out a plan but maroons are a hard sell anyways. There aren't as many sold and, as you are aware, they are aggressive towards each other and make holding juveniles for sale difficult and costly.

Thanks Matt, I was waiting to see what you would say. The male looks like the stripe on his head is starting to show some gold. Im not sure how the color changes look as it comes in. These guys were my first maroons I paired. I will get some pictures to show. Hopefully I can pick up the faint gold coloring with the camera.
