Onyx pair laying, what can i get? - Monday, November 24, 2014 12:25 AM

Hi, everyone.
i have a pair of onyx lays regularly. planning to start raising some onyx babies this time.
the female is a semi onyx with the typical percula's yellowish color, the male has full black with double black dorsal fins or even a little bit "semi picasso" marking.
my question is, ignore the picasso gene, what can i get from this onyx pair. For example, how many full onyx, how many semi, and how many regular perculas.???
thanks!!!!

can't figure out the way to upload pics, maybe i will try later.!!!

To post pics you can upload them to a hosting site like Photobucket and then use the IMG code to post them in the body of your post.

Ignoring the picasso part as you requested, you will get onyx perculas with regular barring, given that the proper environmental conditions are met. Onyx are know to not develop the darker coloration under certain environments. Adults are even know to lose and may or may not regain the black (first hand experience from multiple pairs I have personally kept). The reason for this is not known for certain at this time. As for the barring, it is known to be a water quality issue predominantly in most clownfish (latz and darwin are an exception for example). The perculas are slower to develop the tail and center stripes though.

Thanks for the info.
do you mean, those semi onyx may have the same gene with full onyx, and the reason why they get "semi" black is because of other issue??
so, assume, i can keep good water condition and feed good foods, how many of the onyx offspring can be full black?
sorry, if the question sounds stupid.

I think is all about how strong the darkest onyx holds its black.i had several onyx and still have some .I have some cquest offsprings from a pair that came from cquest hatchery. And cquest lineage that came from rods "rods onyx" my rods took 14 months after I got him so hewas like 18 months he got black in all bbetween 3 stripes tail dint get black or chest or top fin. The week I took him out of the softy tank it turned like yours .half black. In the softy tank I had sand live rock frogspawns, torch corals candy cane , pulsing zenias etc..I took him out and put him in a bare bottom tank just a pot and pc light. My other cquest from the cquest hatchery parents.he came in all black deep black and other sibling from same breeder.i ran a experiment to leave them in a bare bottom tank with no light 23 hour a day for 6 months only 1 hr of light only when I feed them which I only fed them thera A + and he hold his colors and the rods now a female didnt.

Mines where mix with picasso by the time most onyx start at 5 months after 7-8 they get like a little jacket from head bar to middle by 10-11 months should be al black but still developing
fully all around the belly like 14-18 months or earlier depending on diet. Booyasreef onyx start turning at around 4 months
